I also think Mark Knopfler is tremendous! Not to take anything away from the many great guitarists mentioned here but Knopfler is probably my favorite. Here are a couple of clips that show his great guitar playing.

 

 

I also think Bruce Springsteen is underrated, not the best but pretty good. Anyone who has seen Springsteen in concert knows just how good he is. I have seen him 4 times and the last of the shows I was at was in 2000, and that show was tremendous.

I am a huge Bruce Fan who is in his 20's but i don't think i would think of him as one of the best for best gutiarist. He is an unbeleivable peerformer and songwriter.....many stories told through his music. His concerts are terrific and none will match the one i went to during "The Rising Tour" absolutely phoenomenal.

 

I share most of the "standards" that everyone has already named.

 

I'm surprised no one has named Duane Allman yet though!

My favorite of all time, you hit it right on the head. Caught one of his concerts a couple years and it was such a treat to see my favorite in concert. He has such a presence on stage and it just seems his guitar sounds so much better than any i have ever heard.

 

 

As i said eralier i am a Allman Bros fan and in that sense i can not believe no one has mentioned....Dickey Betts, original member and songwriter of Blue Sky. Absolutely great guitar play in that song

Satch by far (guy can do it all, shread, blues, jazz, classical, play silky smooth legatos, TEACH as well....) There isn't a technique he doesn't perform amazingly well....AND he plays musically...doesn't play notes just for the sake of doing so (doesn't play fast just because he can) there is a wonderful musicallity to his playing this is missing from many technical guitarists.

 

But to add, one MUST also stick Hendrix and SRV up there as well.....it would be AMAZING to see what either of them could've done had they been alive longer....

Simply Incredible: All the others mentioned.

As a recovering musician, I love the playing of all all of the guys you mentioned. I played guitar, and a lot of blues all over the US. Of your list, I would only include Hendrix. I'd add Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, John McLaughlin, Phil Keaggy, Gary Moore, Johnny Winter, Johnny Smith, Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian.

 

Knopfler, Clapton, Atkins, SRV (who I saw 3 times and was in awe), Santana, Pat Martino, Mike Oldfield (loved those sessions with Al Kooper) Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, George Benson would be on my 2nd team.

 

BB King the most melodic player I've ever heard, T-Bone Walker, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Keb Mo', Eddie Van Halen would make my honorable mention.

 

Honestly, there are a number of guys you may have never heard of like Don Hales could move into the second team as well.

Well alot of them have been covered I say Satriani as well also glad to see names like Alex Scholnick, Vai , Lynch, Rhoads, etc. One who has not been mentioned who as far as I know was a one album wonder was Rowan Robertson who played on the DIO album Lock up the wolves. Another honorable mention is Chris Impelliteri as well as Vinnie Moore, Zeno Roth, and Gary Moore.
