I've got a bunch of them, mostly Hogans. I think I have a Wilson Staff too.

 

My "gamer" is a 1999 Apex 1 iron. I used to play it a lot when I couldn't hit a fairway wood to save my life. Nowadays it only gets out when I go to Bandon Dunes or Scotland/Ireland. On those trips I dump the lob wedge. When the wind is blowing at 30-40mph, the butter knife is a must-have club, at least for me.

Mizuno true butter knife. I already had 2,3,4. When I saw this in a goodwill I scooped it for $3. Honestly if I could find 5-PW in the Tzoid True. I would buy them. I hit these long irons better than my MP32’s.

Anybody out there want to sell theirs ?

I've also heard of the famous Lee Trevino quote and found this at the thrift store several years ago. I was skeptical I could hit it well, especially during a thunderstorm at the local driving range, but as the Lee Trevino quote suggests, I thought I was safe from getting zapped as long as I was using the butter knife. Was surprised when I crushed it on the first swing. It's a keeper, but it has little room for error. Nostalgic on several points: a 1-iron, a leather gripped club and an Arnold Palmer design.

Some scary looking clubs there gentlemen. Going back some 30 years almost every single hcp player in our club carried a 1 or 2 iron. Mostly Ping mind you, not blades. One lad used to boast how far he his Hogan Medallion but in truth he usually thinned it about 120 carry and the same in running along the deck. Our current captain changed his old set of Pings last year which included a 1 and 2 iron. He said he carried them as ballast. Our Pro sold his old set on Ebay and the 1 and 2 iron went first. I quit carrying 1 and 2 irons years ago as our course has got much lusher fairways these days and carry is more important.

Ive only got two 1-Irons, both of which belonged to tour players however..

 

One is Sir Nicks unlabelled TN-87 Prototype and the other is from a player on the Asian tour during the 80’s-90’s, i think some kind of yoro custom grind.

My first reaction to this post was for me to ask the question “When/why would I ever play a round of golf WITHOUT my 1 iron?” I guess if I played a pitch and putt course I would not need a 1 iron but that’s about the only time I would not be bagging one.

The Nicklaus club was obtained from Jack's club maker Jack Wullkotte, who designed the head for Jack. The grip is the signature tight leather wrap Jack preferred.

There was a lot to be said for a thinned 1 iron back in the day.

Some of those baked UK fairways were perfect for topped balls. It was a shot I should have practised more.

I recall being startled when I measured that the Jack Nicklaus 1-iron and realized that it had very low loft - something like 15 *.

 

Tough to elevate for a mere mortal.

Another couple of knives.

 

I took the Wilson Fluid Feels out last week. Used the knife for four tee shots on the shorter par 4's. Three went about 200 metres to the fairway, one was a pull to the left rough. Great feel.

The Top Flight Pro Forged is from a set I posted elsewhere. They were made in Japan for Ronan Rafferty. (confirmed by Ronan on twitter) . It's extra stiff shaft and strong loft make it a tad harder to hit for us mere mortals.

They are essential the same as the numero uno , except for the loft.

I wish I could download photos. I have a Tom Stewart 1 1/2 Iron which is the exact type of club used by Bobby Jones to win the Grand Slam in 1930. Nothing more like a butter knife than that club!

I love the Titleist TMB-16 2 iron...buddy has one and I absolutely smoke it. Need to pick one up.
