Q for the One Club Chippers

Recommended Posts

For the people who use one club (a 58 or 60) around the green, do you stick with the same club and chipping method when you're in front of a large green with the pin in the back, and nothing to carry?

I guess the crux of the question is, do you alter your normal method in this situation and pull out an 8-iron and get it just on the green and let it run most of the way to the hole or stick with L-wedge and carry it more like normal?

I use my 60 for most of my shots around the green. But for the long shot you are talking about, I like my PW. I place the ball back in my stance and play a low running shot. A slightly closed club face will run better, less chance of checking on the first bounce. I picture 50% carry and 50% run. Of course that changes if the shot is up hill or down hill. Also depends on the green speed as well. For me, I find I do better with just the two clubs for most all shots around the green.

I stuck to one club for years, 56* Cleveland. Because I practiced alot with that club I did use it for everything around the green " one club chipper". It dawned on me that it was not the perfect club for all situations and I now will use any club up to a 6 iron. This has taken practice to get use to a smaller swing motion with the longer clubs but I believe it has been worth it.

I have this same question for the guys using iteaches's short game. I learned from him and my short game is 10x better just pulling 1 club for all the shots, but there are times where I wonder if it would be better to run a PW up there. Luckily I've been having really good results flying it like 3/4 there with a little roll but sometimes they check up when I don't need them to. But any shot other than what you described I'm sold on using nothing but my 58*

If I'm trying to make it, then I want the ball on the green rolling asap.

If I'm just trying to get it close, then I fly it (roughly) to the hole.

I use whatever ever club it will take to achieve either option.

For most, its probably easier to learn to use just one club for all chips but IMO, your sacrificing a little something when doing that. Again though, for most, its probably a worth while trade off.

The reason I asked is because I was working really hard on my chipping and was getting fairly proficient by using different clubs. I would try and get the ball on the green quickly and roll out to the hole. However, I spend a few days working with Monte and he showed me another method, which I think is similar to what iteach teaches. There is much more margin for error and I've had some success using it, but in some instances, it seems like I should go back to the bump and run. I'm torn between just using the Monte method or occasionally using switching back to the bump and run when appropriate.

I usually just use my 50 because ive just gotten so good with it. I usually close the face a ton so it actually plays a couple clubs lower, but it gives me the range to hit a high lob type shot that checks up or a bump and run that rolls out a long way.

Well stick with it a while longer. I hit some horrendous shots and left myself with some really big putts while getting used to it but I refused to stray away while learning. I was close to abandoning it. Now only a month later I'm seeing big improvements. What used to be a 10 footer is now a tap-in, I'm getting much more aggressive with the shots. The difference is big enough that the group I play with continually asks where this short game came from. So I wouldn't mix in a cheating way yet unless you stand to lose some money...I just waited it out and I'm glad I did.

I should add that before this I ONLY hit PW around the green and my 58 was reserved for the sand or a short shot with tall grass. Now that I'm comfortable with this I wouldn't have it any other way. All I would do with a 58 or 60 is like 6 out of 10 would be a good shot, one of those 6 might be the right distance, the rest were blades over the green of fat. I was too scared and was married to the PW and on longer shots 8 iron. Now my expectations with a 58 in my hand is a 3-4 foot circle and honestly I'm hitting it a fair amount of the time. And that's today...last week was more like a 10 foot circle...next week who knows. As I'm typing this I honestly can't believe how much better I am at chipping with a months time vs the past 5 years

But as I said that last insecure part of it I have is looking at 40-60 feet of green in front of me...but I'm not bringing the PW back yet. I'm actually getting better at low running shots with the 58 so time will tell

And I know I'm not the guy that can explain how to do it, it's been posted but if I were to explain even as simple as it is I know I'd relay incorrect information. I think the iteach setup and move thread discusses it. For all I know I'm doing my best to do it right and still might be wrong but whatever I'm doing is working for me. If monte promotes using the bounce of the club I'm sure they are going for the same idea

Would it be considered "bad form" to get a description of the iTeach and Monte chipping styles?
[/quote]
I don't think so, Monte is all about helping people and thus his famous cargo shorts and tee shirt videos. His technique is similar to Utley's, if you're familiar with that. It's basically a backswing that is mostly wrist hinge. The downswing is driven by the right arm, which is long and slow (but accelerating) and letting the weight of the clubface do the unhinging of the wrists, which will expose more of the bounce. I really like this method, but I'm just not sure it's the always the best option yet.

Btw, I had a beautiful flop shot using this today. Put it 4 feet from the hole and saved par.

I agree with you. Bump and run is a great method. What I showed you is for more lofted shots...although the bump and run still needs right arm acceleration.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

this is a funny question that comes up from time to time. I am 24 and my buddy that i play with all the time is 25 and we both play out58 or 60* wedges for almost everything inside 100 yards. Our dads however both play these 5-P bump and runs when the situation calls for it. I think the generation of bump and run of my parents age.
