Golf Galaxy Platinum Fitting

Hello, Has anyone tried the $150 Golf Galaxy Platinum Fitting? I have never been fitted for clubs, I live right near a golf galaxy here on Long Island, NY and based on there website it seems pretty thorough and reasonably priced. I am not opposed to spending money on a quality fitting but I would rather save some money and put it towards the clubs and greens fees especially being a poor post college student. Thanks

here's a link to what they offer:

Everyone will tell you they suck.

Before you assume that's the truth... Do some research on who their fitter actually is... Little bit of googlin'

Then make a decision.

The best part of the deal is this....
Plus suggestions on bag, shoes, gloves, and your tee height.
I strongly suggest getting fit on a grass range with Trackman so that you can feel the turf interaction and see the ball flight. Being in NY there has to someone near by with Trackman.

+1

I would never buy a club from GG unless it was dirt cheap. Even then, I would get fitted via local professional.

A lot of pros at private clubs will do lessons and fittings for non-members. If you know of a club that has a learning facility or a ranked top fitter, check that out first. Our guys charge $75 per element (irons, driver, etc) so you could do a driver and iron fitting for that price and spend about 90 on the trackman, hitting balls off grass, outside (like how you really play).

Golf Digest put a top fitters listing out a few issues ago.

Depends on the fitter. Ask around about the rep of the fitter (even around here there are a lot if guys who got fitted at GG, or know the fitter, or may actually be a fitter (I know of one guy on here who actually fits occasionally at my local GG)

Most places around my way only charge you for a fitting if you don't buy the clubs through them... if you decide to buy, the fee is waived or put toward your purchase.

I went to a ping demo fitting night at a local golf galaxy about a year and a half ago. The fitting was being done by store employees. I was looking to replace a taylor made 3 wood with either a 3 or 4 wood.

Their recommendation was a g20 in regular flex which they also had in stock. The total computer distances were almost identical between the 3 and 4 woods. I left with just the free ping towel that was being given away to all that had signed up for the free event.

Two weeks later I reserved a fitting time with the ping fitting van at a diffrent shop. This outdoor fitting came up with similar results except that the ping rep suggested the tour version shaft in the g20 in regular flex. I ended up ordering a 4 wood 16.5* in the tour shaft regular flex. I have since added a g20 driver and 7 wood with the same shaft as the 4 wood. I am very happy with the results after having gotten a second opinion.

Golf galaxy never mentioned the tour version shafts which costs the same, are slightly heavier, and have less torque than the standard stock shafts. They also did not stock any ping g20 clubs with tour version shafts.

I too am in LI and would recommend you go see Pete @ http://www.petesgolf.com/home.aspx in Mineola or take a drive to novogolf @ http://www.novogolf.com/ in Tappan, NY. I was fitted at Pete's for my mizunos and liked it although I'd prefer an outside fitting which novo does but I didn't know that at the time. Not a ton of selection out here but still some good fitters and I believe to be better than Golf Galaxy. I forgot what I paid but I'm pretty sure it was either $100-$150 for irons and if you buy irons, they don't take that fitting fee of $100-150 off the price...

Thanks for the replies. I know many of you guys may have had bad experiences with Golf Galaxy, but has anyone actually tried this service. It seems like it is a step up from just some retail employee telling you to use a stiff shaft. It seems like they bring in someone pretty knowledgeable to do the fitting.

All that in two hours? Seems like a rush job to be honest. I've spent an hour plus alone on a driver fitting and the same for irons. Plus you're going to do the rest? Seems too good to be true.

That golf galaxy is too hit or miss on who will do your fitting and whether it will be rushed or not. And Petes is overpriced. Way overpriced. Just do yourself a favor and take the ride to pga tour superstore in paramus. You will not be disappointed and you will be amazed at the store compared to golf galaxy and golf Smith. I counted 9 fitting Bays.

GG is a nice place to see and hit clubs but nothing compares to grass and wind outside to see how the ball reacts to the club.

I have been to GG a number of times and where as their employees may be trained and could be decent golfers, it does not make them fitters or able to discern what is best for your game/.swing.

I had an iron fitting done for my previous set GG with the pro, and I thought the experience was good. I mean, as good as can be on a Trackman inside - I'd imagine outside is far, far better. They didn't try to push any specific brand on me (once I went there to try a few irons and the salesman would only bring me Taylor Made clubs, I'm guessing that was the bonus brand that month or something), and they looked into different shafts available for the irons I was interested in. Honestly, it was almost as good as the next fitting experience I had at a Callaway Performance Center (another option at about the same price for driver/iron fitting if there's one around you)

But, like others have said, I'm guessing this is extremely dependent on the store.

I worked at a golf galaxy for years and thoroughly enjoy the store and think the staff does a great job. IMO the platinum fitting is not worth the money for a couple reasons. First of all, all the platinum fitting means is that you are going to get fitted by the PGA Professional. That is nice but from my experience the trained club fitters are just as good (if not better) at fitting clubs then the PGA Pro. Secondly, Golf Galaxy just does not have that many upgrade shafts to try in your clubs. So, if your looking to try out an ADDI or a bunch of x-flex shafts your probably not going to have much luck at golf galaxy.

My advice would be to get your irons fitted at golf galaxy. Ask around and find out who the best fitter is and schedule an appointment. Assuming your looking for steel shafted irons GG will have all the options you need and fit irons for FREE if you purchase the clubs. The wedge fitting is also pretty good at GG now that they have the custom cleveland cart and I think its only around $30. Then, for your driver/fw fitting go ahead and use the money to go to a club fitter who has trackman and a whole load of shafts. I would suggest club champion if there is one near you. It is $150 for a complete long game fitting and you get to try out just about any combo under the sun.

The pros at the titleist regional fitting centers say they can fit you in 5-10 swings, so the time issue shouldnt be a problem
