Switching Clubs

When do you think its time to say goodbye?
I've recently been having this agruement amongst my friends and my parents, when do you deem a club "needing replacement." Most of my friends said that it was when ever they though something better came along. Parents said "when you don't have any grooves or when the head collapses." I don't know when I replace anything, so when do you replace your clubs?

whenever I see something else. I usually switch wedges once a year, and drivers last alittle longer if they work. 3 woods, I will keep if I can hit them, or until I see something else, usually with a better shaft, irons, I am switching because I need something that hits the ball lower, and has more workability, and, I ike the look and feel of the Mizuno's better then the Nikes(going from cast NDS to forged Mp-32's) putters change when I see something I want, but I will stay with one brand, Cameron.

I would say when you start losing confidence in your self. I had my TM supersteels for 7 or 8 years and they are still in my bag. They do great, I never had a reason to change. But I got the lofts checked last fall and they were all out of whack from years of use. The club maker tried to bend them, but was afraid of breaking them, as he was putting a lot of force on them, and they were not even moving. I guess thats why they called them supersteel? So that is the main reason I am looking for a new set.

Anyhow, I put an order in for some cg4's just today to try and kick the super steels out of the bag. We will see how it goes.

i dont have the $$$ to keep updating my clubs. ive had my X-18's since right when they came out (8th grade for me, still currently play them as a sophomore). i play a lot of golf, so im guessing after this season ill need some new sticks. but for me, i can last a long time. i dont plan on buying the sumo or whatever anytime soon, and the technoligy part isnt a big factor.

I buy everything ... if titleist comes out with a significant technological advance you can bet I'll have it.

I caddy and make money and then spend it way too fast .

Amen I caddy too during the summer and I spend it to fast. My parents say that I have an actual obsession with golf equipment. I can pretty much buy anything I want whenever I want. Im only 15 and I buy new clubs just about every month or so.

It's kind of a blend of both. If you are hitting blades, I really don't think you need to change clubs that often....There really isn't a whole lot change in technology. If you start noticing certain trends in you game, like you are missing a lot of shots with long irons, or loss of distance...you may want to change.

I am a bad example, I have just ordered some new clubs after having my current set for 14 years.

Bottom lin eis you need to decide whether its the arrow or the indian. Maybe you just need to go and get refitted and have the clubs reshafdted and bent.

If i notice a playability factor, that i feel is significant to my game, then i'll change. I've had my current three wood for a few years now, its long, it may not be the "best" out there, but it gets the job done pretty darn well... and i can't justify a few hundred more dollars on a slightly better, by a very small margain club. Now putters... thats a whole different story... when ever i "want" a new putter... i'll buy one. :cheesy: :)

For me it depends on wear, because I don't want to spend all my money just re-uping my bag with everything new that comes out. You buy a laptop one day, then 1 month later a "new and improved" laptop comes out thats "better" and you buy it. Keep doing this and you'll just keep digging yourself deeper into a money pit forever. Its impossible to stay up to date with the technology, so I just get what works in my bag, and use it until it dies.

I have a set of Ta3 irons that are pretty much shot at this point, so its time for an upgrade on those. I just updated my putter, driver, and I've been playing with the same 3 wood for a while now. Wedges I'll replace when the grooves are gone. If you keep updating, its hard to get use to what you have, especially clubs that require a great deal of feel such as wedges and putters.

So, for me, run them til they die!

I agree, once you start hitting blade-type irons or "player's-cavity" irons, there isn't much more technology you can get. Otherwise if some great deal comes along for any of the woods or putter, then I would think about changing. Wedges I would change whenever they wear out. Driver I suppose I would change the shaft if I found a head that I like but arent getting a good flight.

It's a feel thing. If you know it's time to get something different, go for it.

When I reasllyu get into golf, 3 years ago, I started to buy equipment. It all started with a SC futura Phantom and then came the 3 wood. My current gamer, a r7 tp. I bought it when it came out and I havent found anything that can kick it out of my bag.. then I bought my irons, rac tps, after a month of trials and testing, I finnally found that these irons were the best for me and then I bought them loaded of confidence. Now after 1 1/2 year playing them, I still have the same confidence witrh my irons. Then I bought the wedges and rescue and driver and so on... I only buy clubs after intensive testing so I surew these clubs are the best for me... I have a lil' addiction to TM clubs, but THey really work for me so it's a bonus that all clubs are TM except putters.

Thats the only thing that changes often in my bag because I buy a scotty when I feel I need a new one... I now have four of them as gamers and I might buy a new one when the new ones will come out. I might like a circa VI or a newport detour or something like that...

For now, since I found clubs that I'm comfortable hitting, I'll start trying some new shafts... My 3 wood needs a new one, andI'm planning to reshaft my irons with some project Xs

That's about it, but I really like equipment but I don't change unless I find something really better than what I have....

It all depends on what clubs you are talking about. While technology changes every year, the only real advances that we see are in drivers for the most part; slight advances have been made in putters and Fairway woods aswell. The reason why companies are coming out with 'new and better' things is to alledgedly make the game easier for us. You ask the question, 'when it is time to switch out my equipment?'. It's really a personal answer...for me, I try and look for new drivers every year to see if I can find something in the new technology that will give me better results. Many people like to replace their wedges every year (due to the wear on the grooves), but in mine and many other cases, I get so dialed in with my wedges that it probably would not be wise to change. My coach insists that I go to every demo day that comes to our area until I find the perfect specs in all my clubs, from the driver to the putter.

I think a lot of it is a confidence thing, some of us feel that when we start swinging bad, we ultimately resort to blaming the equipment, but if you think about it, in the past you have made good swings, and had good results with every club in your bag (or it shouldn't be there). So really, it's whenever you feel the need to change, or you find something new that you hit better than what you currently have.

i change a driver whenever my dad breaks his driver...give him mine and i get a new one....this happens every year.

fairway woods whenever i get new clubs, dont really wear those down

irons, ive had mine for 2 years and im switching this year. Mostly because of wear and new technology.

wedges...every year, my 58* has NO grooves!

putter, whevever i find something that works, love my newport 2 as of now tho
