Golf Movies, thinking out loud.

Talking mainstream, general public kind of high budget movie stuff, what would make a good Golf movie?

 

Need an interesting plot that also a Golfer would like, believable golfing actors with mass appeal. What would "we" want to see in the theaters?

Dead Solid Perfect was a very underrated golf movie


The swings of the actors is the biggest thing to me...thats why The Legend of Bagger Vance bugged me...Matt Damon's swing wasn't at a level that it was believable that his character would beat Jones or Hagen

I liked Legend of Bagger Vance for the most part, but agreed on the swing.

I have seen it and it is pretty bad. Poor acting, horrible plot and premise and the golf is not believable.I mean, if you're really bored I can think of worse ways to waste 2 hours.

My favorite is "The Greatest Game Ever Played". It's a great lesson in golf history. I read the book "Seven Days in Utopia"....and I wouldn't pay to see the movie.

Greatest game ever played is a decent movie in my book, not the best, but very watchable and rewatchable. I usually watch it when I feel my game needs a pick me up

It is a good golf movie and a pretty good history lesson, but the playoff wasn't that close. I think he won by 4 or 5 strokes in real life.

My favorite is "The Legend of Bagger Vance." Not very believable, but a good movie. The end gives us hope. Jack Lemmon trolleys his clubs with him to the after life. Maybe, there's golf after death. I hope so.

You can't beat a movie that has a spy undercover as a golfer to get information out of his mark. Sure, it only lasts 10 minutes but those 10 minutes are better than any golf movie ever made.

The secret to making a great golf movie is to concentrate the story on something other than golf and make golf the plot device. Caddyshack isn't about golf, its about new money vs old money. Tin Cup isn't about golf, its a love story between Jonathan Kent and the insurance investigator from The Thomas Crown Affair.

Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore. Tin cup was very good as well.

While "The Greatest Game Ever Played" was entertaining, it was wildly historically inaccurate.Francis did not make a putt on the last hole to win as he actually won by 5 shots! Ted ray never quit mid round as he actually only finished one shot behind Vardon. Alot of other miscues as well.

Seven days in utopia was basically bought by callaway golf to use as one big ad. "Wow he really has a good chance to win the tournement, especially with his new Callaway Ciablo Octane! The latest and greatest in driver technology featuring revolutionary forged composite technology."

"The Match" would make an interesting movie. Hollywood would probably butcher it though. Great book.

The Legend of Bagger Vance was not true to the book and the movie was not very good as a result. The "love" affair aspect was absent in the book and Will Smith was terrible. Morgan Freeman should have been cast as Bagger Vance. Will Smith always "plays himself" and in my view is a very weak actor totally without the depth and character that Morgan Freeman normally brings.

Correct, the details in "The Greatest Game Ever Played" are not accurate:

But the real story would make for less interesting drama, so I can see why they changed it up a little. I'm ok with it. Good movie.

Ive tried to get a dvd of "dead solid perfect" ... Liked the movie years ago.... Cant get my hands on a copy!

There's nothing worse than a sports movie where the actor obviously has no athletic coordination whatsoever. I think the worst example I've seen is the pathetic attempt to convince us that Tim Robbin's full body dry heave pitching motion was that of a promising major league pitching prospect in Bull Durham.

When I saw Shia LaBeouf and Michael O'Keefe swing a golf club it was believable and help to make the movie credible.

I heard a guy talk about a drinking game where every time you saw a rules violation in Happy Gilmore you did a shot. That could get dangerous having seen the movie a few times I would think.

"A Gentleman's Game" was filmed (the golf course parts) at my club. It was a bad movie, but it's neat to have had the (or any) film shot at a place you know well.

Most interesting about the golf scenes was that many were filmed with the golfers playing the hole(s) backward (no doubt for cinematographic reasons)...

I've tried also. I don't think they ever released it on DVD. I did find a VHS copy on eBay a few years ago (now if I can just find my VCR).

I think the intent was to come up with a new golf movie idea. I'm drawing a blank really. I can come up with really bad golf movie ideas. Take the plot of mighty ducks, switch the sport, move the location to south boston, with mark wahlberg as the coach, "Pahh for the Course". Straight to DVD!

In all seriousness, there's been quite a few very good golf stories. Maybe a good biopic of one of the greats, through some struggle/drama in there.
