What is it about a golf ball...

...that makes people do stupid things? Just reading some recent posts and thinking about things I see on the course. People fighting over balls, people picking up other people's balls, people searching the woods and ponds and lakes for balls, people hiring people and paying courses to allow them to search for balls. Are these things made of gold? Are they really that expensive that people need to steal other people's balls on the course? Is it really worth the time and effort to search for balls on every hole or water hazard you see during a round (played with a guy like this recently)? Why do people take such pride in finding balls? "I found 5 balls during the round today and 2 were ProVs!!!" They are golf balls people!!! Each one is worth between $.25 and $4, depending on brand. Why do people have buckets and buckets of balls they've found in their garage? It will take a lifetime to use them all AND at the rate they are storing they will have a garage full. Why do people horde boxes and boxes of balls they bought at a good price? I for one don't spend a lot of money on golf balls and always take advantage of balls on sale or BOGO offers and buy a couple boxes but I know people who have 10-15 boxes of new balls sitting in the garage.

Trust me, good golf balls are great and all but people go way overboard. IT'S A GOLF BALL!!!!

I agree. Pick a ball you like at a price you like, buy a couple dozen and use them up. Then repeat the process.

Agree and why I just understand people fighting over balls or picking up someone else's ball or holding up rounds to find balls when yours is not lost.

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I often rate the quality of my round by the amount of golf balls I find more than my score.

My wife will ask "how was golf" and I'll reply "great, I found six balls today."

theres a guy like that at my club that loves nothing more then to walk into the middle of another fairway, not his own, pick up a ball, announce he found a good ball and pick it up...

low class.....

on the next tee box ill see him walking out and have to shout!!! hes only been confronted about half a dozen times...by me! he just doesnt get it. the best part is that he like a 3 handicap!! what the hey?!

This is why unless the course is completely deserted, I'll never pick up a ball I find. It's also good to use things like FG Tour yellow balls to prevent others from doing the same to yours.

I play at a muni where it seems everyone plays Pinnacles or Top Flites - whenever I hit a tour ball into the woods, it magically mutates into two of the above.....

Haha! No need to be embarrassed. I just find it funny. As long as you don't hole up the round.

Because there is no other sport played with a ball where you either can lose them or find them! We just do it.

Sidenote; there are so many stats on PGA tour.com - I wonder how many balls lost per round is average? Seriously, lots of pros can drive it off the planet and lose them way out of bounds, many holes for par 3s seem to have water they can't avoid. If we subconsciously knew they lost something like 1.4 balls/18 holes, less of us would think about that.

At my home course (private) I average 1 lost ball per 18. I don't usually look too hard for a lost ball if it was hit well off line. However, I will scan area where balls are often lost and pick up some on those locations (not a chance they are a shot on a current hole being played by someone else). These are placed in my shag bag and I will often deposit them back onto the course driving range. No Pro V's in good shape or TP5 balls make it to shag bag if they aren't too beat up :)

I have balls taken all of the time. Almost always it's some old fart. Look out for the old timers. They're ball hawks.

Agreed. They are the same old men who pick my ball up to identify it, then ask if it is mine. Don't touch!

Side story... A few weeks ago it was getting late, and went to the range to hit a small bucket and do a quick 9 on a par 3 (the small buckets at this place are about 20-30 balls on a good day). On the way there I remember I didn't bring any to play, so I "borrowed" 2 balls from the range bucket (chances being, if I lose one here it WILL be in their pond, so they get it back regardless)... Of course this is the only time there that my bucket didn't come with at least 1 or 2 good balls donated to the range (which I have done a few times myself, so I didn't feel too bad borrowing them. So I play the par 3, and walk out of there with a dozen balls (and I was not even looking...just walking the course), and still had the 2 borrowed balls I started with (which I had fun and drove them off the 9th tee, over the green and then the fence, effectively putting them back on the range)

haha! Please don't ban me. :( I played with another ball hawk on Saturday. Guy would walk in any opening in the woods he could find and search around. I'm hitting and all I hear is him crunching branches while walking around in the woods 20 yards from me. He found 4 balls the whole round and was very excited about it.

The worst is when someone hits your ball and leaves theirs behind. You ask them what kind of ball they are playing and they answer they have no clue. The sad part is the league that is in front of our league does this weekly. The one night it happened to me on hole 2 then happened to my opponent on 3 we both ended up taking penalties. Even worse I was playing a yellow Srixon how they thought it should be theirs is beyond me.....

Big delay waiting for a group who cut in front of the group in front us yesterday. Once the group in front left the top of the hill, I wait a few minutes and then uncork my drive to the top of the hill/fairway. Ground is hard and fast, so 300 plus is very likely2. Guess what, my ball is nowhere to be found. My bet is it rolled close to the other group, who promptly commandeered my prov.

Have also seen jackwads pickup my group's balls from the fairway while we watch from the tee. Seriously? People are such idiots.
