Bronx/Westchester best public courses?

any good recommendations? anything within 20-30min of Pelham would be fine. we usually play Bethpage weekly and don't mind getting up before the sun for early tee times.

 

I've looked up all the Westchester county courses, but I've never seen any of them in person for comparison.

I've played Pelham/Split Rock in the Bronx. Not bad. And there's always Spook Rock in Weschester.

I've played Pelham/Split Rock in the Bronx. Not bad. And there's always Spook Rock in Weschester.

Spook Rock is not in Westchester, its in Rockland (suffern).

Hudson hills is the best westchester public course but its on the pricey side for what it is. The other westchester courses (Duwoodie, Saxon woods etc) are your basic muni's. Nothing great but cheap and playable.

Agree with NYCgolfer 17 - Hudson Hills is best public course in Westchester (conditions, layout), while the other munis aren't going to be better than Pelham/Split Rock.

Is Ferry Point under construction over the weekends? Sneak over the fence and play a few holes in the dark?

I was driving over the whitestone this weekend and saw what I assume is ferry point. Look like its going to be real nice. links style in the bronx...

Hudson Hills is absolutely the best pick in Westchester.
Pound Ridge is an order of magnitude nicer, along with its higher cost to play!

Also in Rockland is Spook Rock GC and New York Country Club

You might also like Marine Park in Brooklyn. It's a muni, but it's in really good condition this year! It's a links style course with dunes and plenty of fescue, and the wind can really pickup on some days. I've played most of the NYC muni's and Marine Park blows them all away IMO.

Of the Westchester munis, Hudson Hills is nice, but carts only, and I don't think it's necessarily worth the price difference for walkers. I played Mohansic a lot this year, and conditions have been good. They're replacing a lot of the bunkers, so some are ground under repair right now. I heard Saxon Woods is in good condition this Fall, but I haven't been there yet. But there's nothing wrong with Pelham, it's a fun course to play.

I live in Manhattan and usually play Long Island courses. I played Pelham this past Tuesday but felt the greens were pretty bad. It's still early in the year I guess. I love going out east to LI to play, but from this thread it seems like Spook Rock and Patriot Hills are good alternatives. What else is there that's an hour's drive from NYC I can play?

I happen to enjoy Split Rock if you don't get stuck behind slow groups. I still need to check out Marine Park.

Centennial is nice but it's a bit pricey and is in Carmel so it's a bit of a drive from Manhattan. They have great practice facilities though.

Patriot Hills in Stony Point is a bit closer and the front nine is interesting in its elevation changes. Worth it if you can get it for less than $60 on golf now.

I like New York Country Club because it's a quick drive from the city and it's also interesting with elevation changes and was in good shape as of last year.

On Long Island I find the further you're willing to drive the less crowded. That's one reason I like Cherry Creek -- it's usually not too crowded. Willow Creek in Mt. Sinai is kept in good shape and is interesting with lots of bunkers and some water. It can get very slow at times but I've played it in 4 hours.

Pine Hills and Swan Lake are ok tracks but nothing special and are about an hour and fifteen from the city.

I would avoid Eisenhower as it's a 6 hour round on the weekends and not much better during the week.

I may try some tracks in Jersey this year for a change of pace.

I also think that all the Bethpage courses can not be praised enough. Obviously Black and Red are fantastic, but I also think Blue is a great course, and can be played quickly at the right time during the week.

They say it in a way as if this is outrageous. I no longer live in NYC, but schlepping to Bethpage was a pain. IF this course turns out to be a very nice course and closer to the city, $125 isn't too much. I think about Pound Ridge which goes as high as $210.

While $125 isn't cheap, if it's a 2-3 time a year course for locals, it's worth it. The problem with the NYC courses is you get construction workers wearing boots playing the courses. They tear up the course (literally) and the pace of play becomes 6 hours. $125 might be the weekend time, I would expect weekdays and afternoons to be a little less.
