Amazing to see #16 without the grandstands as the vibe couldn't be more different from the WM Open. Also #17 with a back left pin when 20 MPH downwind with very firm greens was difficult to say the least.

Old Course St. Andrews - June 14, 2022

 

It was a privilege to get to play the Old Course a few days before it was closed to complete preparations for next month's Open Championship.  It was part of a group trip put together by the local golf association and The Experience St. Andrews.  I played 6 courses in 7 days with this round as the centerpiece.  What made it even more special was seeing Gary Player standing by the green as we finished the 18th and having him wave us over to talk to us.  Plus, the Claret Jug was sitting right there.  I'm the joker in shorts.

Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on a very chilly, rainy and windy 17th of June 2022. This is a big, brawny course that played very tough in this weather.

it's pretty mundane desert course outside of all of the hype it gets for the WM Open.  worth playing at least once but I prefer greyhawk for the same money.

Gullane No. 1 - June 10, 2022

 

I think we got the full "golf in Scotland" experience on that day.  The wind was already at ~25 mph when we arrived.  That was nothing compared to what occurred when we reached the 7th tee, which I think is the highest point on the course that faces the toward the ocean.  In less than a minute after the first rain drops started falling, the wind ramped up to at least 40-45 mph with sideways, stinging hail.  We took cover behind a mound behind the tee as the group behind us crouched behind a bench.  That lasted about 10 minutes and even as it turned to rain, we still couldn't keep a ball on a tee, so I just hit 3w off the deck.  We somehow finished the hole and took cover next to the WC shack.  Then, a few minutes later, the sun came out, the wind "calmed down" to ~20 mph and off came the rain gear.

 I'm back in the U.S. now. I had an amazing time. 9 rounds in a week, all walking on links, which for the most part had very high dunes and/or hills, rain and several days of wind gusting into the 40-50 mph range. I'll post pix from the other courses in a few days as I'm a wee bit tired and jet lagged, (and sorry that the trip had to end). It was my fourth visit to Scotland, but first to Aberdeen and the Highlands. The term "great" is used too frequently in reference to golf courses, but GB&I have a lot of great courses per capita and I am grateful for the opportunity to sample them.  I sometimes think of the true links like whiskeys (or whiskys in Ireland). All of them  have some characteristics in common, yet each has its own  different flavor notes.  When playing a links hole for the first time I oftentimes find myself flashing back to another links as a point of reference. If I can find the time I'll post a trip report

Fraserburgh Golf Club, Corbie Hill Course, June 17, 2022 4 pm tee time (it stays light in June until after 10:00 pm). Fraserburgh GC was formed in 1777 and is the 7th oldest golf club in the world. The current design on Corbie Hill was done by James Braid in 1920. The course was a hidden gem, but now more visitors are playing here on their way from Aberdeen (Royal Abderdeen, Cruden Bay and Trump) to the Highlands and the green fee for non Scots has risen sharply in the past 5 years (but is still less than its more famous neighbors). It's an understated and very welcoming club that shouldn't be missed if you are in the region. Holes 1 and 18 are in the flatland across from the clubhouse. Those two holes lead to and from the 16 wild ride holes that are routed up, down and across the hills.

Crail Balcomie Links, Scotland - June 15, 2022

 

"Quirky" is probably the most-often used description I'd seen/heard about this course.  It's not a long course by any means, but that doesn't mean it's not challenging.  Some of the par-3's were the most memorable for me - #13, #14, and #16.  The water in the area is so unbelievably clear.  I almost wished I had my fishing gear with me.

I'm getting an error when clicking on that link.  However, I have the feeling I know what sort of conditions are in that clip - probably not unlike what we saw at Gullane on our trip.

Not that bad, but it was a steady rain all day and the fog rolled in on the last 4 holes with visibility reduced to about 150yds… However, the rest of the week we had chamber of commerce weather with blue skies and average wind.

Yeah, steady rain is a different animal altogether.  That squall at Gallane was the only time I had to put on the rain gear.  I have a low-res clip of what it was like for us on the 7th tee which was taken by one of my friends.  It definitely doesn't do it justice because this was just as it started, before the hail came.  It was while we actually thought we could still keep going, though we took cover shortly after this clip.  I hope it's at least viewable.  Too bad there was no time lapse camera because you could see the whole "front" move toward us from over the water as we were playing.

 

(Edit.  I'm going to go ahead and add a clip from Carnoustie as we were "serenaded" by the sounds from the nearby military firing range.)
