Story from today's round - THAT guy.

So, a newer friend of mine asked if I wanted to play today and it was early enough (7am) where I could make it. He tells me a guy he works with is coming. Well, turns out the guy from work has no clue whatsoever about golf etiquette. While you are teeing off he walks around, gets crap from the cart, talks, etc... When you are in the fairway he drives his cart past you within 20 yards during your setup or might stop next to you and start to tell you a story when the last thing you want to hear is a story. On the green he walks behind you while your putting, walks behind the hole, tells a story, talks to his buddy, drops the pin 3 feet from the hole, etc...

All this led to some bad shots for me on the front. I was annoyed, angry but didn't say anything cause he is a friend of a friend. My buddy had texted me and so I texted him back saying I wanted to wring this guy's neck. He texted back, "Love the one your with". From there on out I was able to ignore his lack of etiquette and play well. (no passive bragging. It's hard not to actually. hahaha!!! :) )

Also, my son is in the juniors camp there this week and I had to tee off in front of his group with the assistant pro on the 18th tee. I hit a good drive but missed a 5 foot par putt with another group, with the club pro, standing on the fringe. I guess I got a little nervous but didn't really feel nervous. It was a poor putt.

Tough situation because getting pissed at the guy can make for an awkward round, but also you want to say something if he is affecting your playing. I tend to be passive and ignore guys with 0 etiquette until it comes to something like driving the cart a foot away from the green or doing something to slow up play. I guess now you know at least one guy you dont want to play with again

I spoke to my buddy about it after the round. He told me he is always like that. Another situation. I play early so I can get done quick and work the rest of the day. We are standing on a teebox where the cart is in front of you and I watch as he takes his rain jacket and slowly and meticulously folds it up to return it to his bag. I turn to my buddy and roll my eyes and he says, "He does this s**t all the time." So annoying.

"He is always like that" then why on earth would you invite him to play golf with someone who is a serious player. It's cool if your friend is playing with that guy on his own but to have him join in with other players just doesn't make sense.

On the other hand playing with regular players may teach him the proper etiquette....or not

Just say "Hey, can you hold still a sec for my shot? Thanks".

I don't think that's being a d!ck and you make it aware that he's doing something wrong. If no one teaches this guy the proper etiquette he'll never learn.

In all seriousness it sounds like that round sucked. Glad you were able to pull it together. It's very interesting to hear stories like this for me because frankly I never notice these things on the course. I guess I get so focused on the shot that I couldn't even tell you if my playing partners were doing cartwheels. Sometimes guys will apologize for walking in my line or talking while I'm hitting and I can't figure out what they are apologizing for because I'm completely oblivious. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

What's up with your pros? Why do they make people so nervous? Do they require members to do burpees if they don't play well?

Got paired up with two doofuses a few weeks ago similar situation they would not keep quiet when I was hitting and kept asking me for yardages since I have a rangefinder like I was their caddy.

Finally we were on a tee I got my yardage and was in my pre shot routine. They stroll up from their cart talking loudly and ask me what the yardage was on the par 3 when I'm about to hit.

I had enough and told them if they learned to shut up I might tell them. I think they got the point. I hate obnoxious cargo short wearing idiot golfers.

Absolutely. Years ago I tended to move around on the tee box more than I should, because I didn't know.

A complete stranger asked me nicely to be still while he was hitting. I apologized didn't think bad of him, that's how I learned that 20 years ago

Agree. If I end up playing with him again I will say something like that.

I haven't played with someone like that for a while so I had a hard time focusing but was able to block it out after about the 6th hole. This is not a country club so I'm not a member and I don't know the guy. As I said I didn't feel nervous but I did choke on that putt. Also, it was for 79, which would be the best score I've had on that course.

My fear would be to say something to him, then immediately shank the ball up my pants leg. He's follow-up with some smart-a** comment....../cut-to/..... you hear the EMTs radio to the hospital. "Central, we have a golfer here...I don't think he's gonna make it...we can't get this nine-iron out of his a**".
