Played 2 rounds with Mizuno JPX825 irons (non pro)

First time playing with such jacked up irons.

 

Feel: surprisingly smooth. I did not feel any harshness on either round. S300 shafts.

When pured they approached forged sweetness.

They surprised me here.

 

Look: top line isn't grossly vulgar and though they are GI irons, at address they didn't seem overly bulky. The robust perimeter weighting isn't visible at address. They did a great job with the look, if you will. The offset wasn't that bad tho it was an initial issue on my first round - that's on me tho. I don't think anyone could say these are nice looking, pretty irons. They just aren't in my opinion.

 

Performance: they launch rather high, as you'd expect, even with s300s. Can't imagine how high they'd go with XPs! The turf interaction was very nice even for someone used to soles about 3/8" in size. But the course was damp so I have not idea how'd they interact on hard, thin lies. The PW, 9 &8 irons on several occasions came off the face hotter than expected and some distance control issues happened on bump&run shots. Additionally, distance variance was an issue for me throughout the set. Pure a 4 iron (really a 3 iron) and it'd go 230 on a damp fairway. But it could also with a slight miss go 200. I thought that a pretty big gap. The ball rockets off the hot face. I had no capacity to draw these clubs. It cost me big time. All these dogleg lefts I just couldn't get it around the corner - blowing through the fairway into trees. Cutting the ball was remarkably easy. Pretty easy to hit straightish. I was using a TM Penta5 ball and the spin off these irons was not all that great. I was really surprised by this, given the spin control I get from my ancient Hogans.

 

Overall: as much as I b**** about the performance, I have to say these are very nice GI clubs for older guys and once, twice a month players. Also if you have problems launching the ball, these are great for that, particularly for mid to long irons. They feel darn nice even on mishits. I suspect if I hit a 1000 range balls, I'd have less dispersion problems? I don't know.

 

Coming from blade/MB irons, the ease of use of these clubs felt almost comical at times. Mishits don't go a mile normally...

 

Wish the set had a 3 iron. (ie a 2 iron)

Compared to the 825 Pro's I just gave up they look darn big...but I knew that anyway after demoing them both back to back several times. I have no problem drawing either club [size=2](but I can hook anything.)[/size]. I definitely don't like the 825 PW/GW out of the rough though.

When compared to classic lofts (i.e. 50 degree PW) they are juiced - and comparatively speaking only the 6, 7, 8, 9 are "jacked up" 1 degree compared to the 825 pro's. Remember, there are clubs out there now with 26 degree 6 irons like the Xhot's.

Thanks for the corrections. I forgot to mention that the higher lofted ones aren't as jacked. I had to find this out on the course so there were some short PW on as I thought they were 9 iron...

I don't use jacked as a pejorative, it is what it is...

We were playing a little 20 man 'tournament' with some small money. These were a friend's clubs who bought them after he hit the 6 iron 220. He borrowed it during play - what a rule break!!! - and bombed it a mile.

We won.

I don't consider a 45* PW jacked these days. I don't mind the stronger lofts, but do not like over length shafts.

I got fitted for JPX-825's and I love them. I do struggle with distance control thought. Still having a hard time wrapping my mind around some of the distances I get out of clubs. I basically use a full club less for these. Pate of it is the clubs, and part of it is that I am getting better.
