R9 Super Tri versus R1

Recommended Posts

I fractured the crown on my Super-Tri last month. My pro is holding an R1 (black) for me to try. I'm laid up right now and won't be able to swing a club for 2 or 3 weeks. That won't stop me from thinking about golf. Could someone tell me the difference in the R9 Super-Tri head (characteristics such as weighting, center of gravity, etc...) and the R1? If anyone has played both heads, what was your experience?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks to all who respond.

The Supertri was a great driver in it's day but most found the head to be 'very spinny'.............and compared to many of today's drivers you would most probably find that the Supertri would be lagging behind in overall distance. I had a Supertri for a season and loved it......could not miss a fairway but always felt the distance was lacking...............but then progressed to a 910 (was not impressed and could not find a shaft that worked for me)...........Then went to an R11 with an RIP alpha that was beating the Supertri hands down by 10-20 yards...............which then gave way to an RBZ Tour which added a few more yards but less consistency..................which then px'd for an R1 Black which is by far the best driver I have ever owned for both distance and accuracy reasons.............and the spin on the R1 is at least a 1000 rpms less than the Supertri!

Very different heads. r9 is higher spinning and launching. Very different feel (and sound) on contact. That's one aspect of the r1 I personally didn't like but it's completely subjective so might be different for you. r1 is heavier but stock shaft is lighter to compensate some. May depend what loft you set the r1 at but the ST in general has a more closed face angle as well.

I actually found the rbz stage 2 driver to be a better fit for me coming from the super tri, you might went to give it a shot.

I think the supertri is a great driver still if it fits your swing. Still feels way more solid to me than any of the newer offerings. Anyone else think the clubs of the last couple years all feel dead compared to supertri?

I certainly felt that way about the r11, r11s and r1. Hard and muted (r11 was better than the later two). I don't think the rbz's (stage 1 or 2) felt 'dead' although they didn't feel as solid or lively as the ST. They were more on the soft side of the "feel range".

I thought the rbz did feel a bit better than the r series but I like the moveable weights so they were never really an option for me. It's not just Taylormade I tried though. I thought the covert and razr fit extreme felt weird too. Hard to describe, they just didn't feel as solid to me. I've been itching to buy a driver for 2 years and just can't pull the trigger. I'm guessing I would get used to the feel though. I do get slightly better numbers with the new stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. I did not realize that the Super-Tri was considered a higher spin driver. I liked my Super-Tri very much. The few times I was on a launch monitor with the Super-Tri, my readings were consistent at 101 MPH swing speed, 145 MPH ball speed, 2800 RPM spin rate, 14 degree launch angle (8.5 degree head). If I go with the R1, I will probably use the same shaft I had in my Super-Tri which is a Fujikura Motore F1 stiff. The shaft was an upgrade on the stock shaft that came with the Super-Tri. Swapping out the shaft adapters from the R9 Super-Tri to the R1 shouldn't be difficult. Perhaps I'll need to increase the loft in the R1. Does that make sense?

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been playing the R1 this entire season and absolutely hate it, I sold my R9 Supertri on the Bay over the winter in favor of the R1 after being fit for it and am spraying my drives everywhere. I finally quit using it in favor of an RBZ 3 wood so I could at least be hitting from the fairway. May be buying the R9 again soon.

My specs are almost the same as your with my 8.5 ST and loved it for two years. I had great luck with almost every shaft I tried with it but mainly with a PX 6.0 and a Oban Devo. Later on, my DI 6 was the new go to shaft. I also played my ST set up 8-1-8 instead of 1-16-1 which lowered the LA and spin some, plus maybe picked up ball speed to, as my specs were 99 SS 150 BS 12.7 LA and 2700 spin. I strongly suggest this set up with any ST.

I also felt that the ST played really well in any Open position.

Now for the R1.....I had some really nice days with it but I really never settled on a shaft and the Extra DI I got did nothing for it like it did with the ST.
I did not like playing the R1 in the open position as the ST...just think that the ST is a tad closed in N compared to the R1

Also, the R1 head is very heavy when compared to a ST....Played the R1 with 4 grams less then stock.

Last, besides all the other things that other members added, I just could not find a got fit shaft wise with the R1 and with the ST, I found many including a real deal Motore F1 which was my first shaft that I played in it after it was in a 460 Tour head 8.5 R9 460

I'll share my story with you as it is a bit relevant to your question.

I have been playing the r11 for 2 years now and have always struggled keeping it in the fairway. Distance was ok but hard to control the ball flight.
I also have all my driver shaft cut to play between 44 to 44.5". I found the sorter shaft to be easier to control and funny enough faster for me and my swing.
My swing speed is between 112 and 117 mph. I spin the ball too much. So I play with low spin ball but even with low spin ball. I generate too much spin.
The r11 is so hard to control for me that I have not played it this season. Instead I used my long 2 hybrid from the tee.

A few days ago, while playing, my golf partner played a R9 super deep. A low spin version of the R9.
While we were talking he asked me to hit his R9 and absolutely loved it. I jockingly told him his club was unfair and like cheating.
Needless to say, I have now bought an old R9 super deep which should be delivered this afternoon. I am really excited about it...
I am not telling you how far I was hitting this club because in Colorado the ball goes farther and folks in this forum never believe it and like to make fun of people. But I would say this, the R9 super deep is the longer driver I have ever played. But the reason I am switching to it, is actually because of the control. I could put a slight draw on the ball with ease. I have not tried to fade it yet, but I am sure ill have no problem fading my driver :).

Supertri prob best described as mid launch, high spin.
R1 high launch, low spin.

Depends what you need. The reason why you see quite a few pros using seemingly GI drivers is that their spin is so low naturally. Bubba and DJ have freakish launch/spin numbers. Add a fast SS and you get massive distance.

You can cut down the spin numbers in R9 Supertri by placing the 16 gram weight in the heel or toe and not in the rear weight spot.
