Been thinking that Jackie Chan should play jimmie in the movie since Marlin Perkins is dead.
[/quote]

I'm 6'1 so they're going to have to do some serious CGI on Jackie to make it realistic.

My four year old son and I had an eventful round this past weekend. The tadpoles are growing (sprouting legs), the bull frogs were croaking, and the painted turtles were basking in the sun.

My son has never held/touched a frog so I attempted to get my hands on one during our last few rounds. I could get close, but they would jump when my hands closed in. My fortunes changed during our last round as I managed to 'sneak up' on a one eyed bull frog. The little critter was literally missing his left eye so I was able to catch him unaware. My son was uber-excited to 'pet' the croaker after he jumped into his lap and calmly placed him back in the pond after our brief visit.

I love when he walks into the door and immediately tells my wife about our golfing exploits.

You are a wise man and a great dad PD. Showing your son everything that you can see/find on a golf course will make him appreciate this great game even more.

I'm smart enough to know that: we are both benefiting from the time spent together; my wife loves the three hour 'break'; we are both fascinated by little 'critters'.

The golf is secondary at the moment DP. I bring his clubs but he may hit only a few shots and/or roll a few putts. He thinks the golf course is a big playground that is filled with sand, water, and animals and I'm totally cool with that.

This brings back memories of catching pollywogs as a kid.

Also, a friend of mine's dad used to golf at a course in Long
Beach, Ca that had a lake where they allowed us to fish. We
were probably 7-8 yrs old at the time. He'd play golf while we
fished. Caught lots of little bluegill, lol. We'd stay out there for
hours and fish. Had little interest in golf at that age. And, yes,
we released the little fish back into the lake.

PD, glad you two are having some good father son time on
the course. It's good for us "adults" to see things through the
eyes of a child and to remember how the world is a wondrous
place to a young one........and us, too, if we want.

This wasn't on a golf course, but the other day I come out my front door, and this hen is just sitting on the lawn in the pouring rain looking at me a bit miserably with her feathers all spread out. I had seen her previously with a bunch of chicks, and I guess they were all sitting under her feathers. What a dedicated and loving mom!

I caught my share of Bluegill when I was a child. Always thought I had a big fish on the line as they seemed to battle with me for hours. In reality it probably was minutes before I reeled them in. My home course has ponds filled with them. The course owner often brings his grandson fishing in the summer. I don't know how those dirty ponds sustain life, but they certainly do.

Wondrous!

Nearly attacked by a Canadian goose this morning. I was passing a family of geese who were feeding next to a pond. 6 small babies, a Mommy and a Daddy. I made a wide pass around the gaggle and the Daddy began to flap his wings feverishly as he advanced toward me. I tried to avoid his gaze and swiftly walked away. When I was out of danger I wished him a Happy Father's Day and carried on down the fairway. Can't fault a papa who's protecting his flock.

Happy Father's Day to all. I wish you and your gaggles a wonderful day.

Today while making the rounds and cleaning the course we found this on the cart path...
A catfish... He was a good length from any water hazard, at least the distance of a hole (like 600 yards).
He fought us as we tried to save him. Kept jumping off the shovel my co worker was using to transport him.
The fish finally got tired and sat still. We got him the next hole where he was tossed back in the water. He swam away and never looked back.
I see cool stuff every day but this was definitely a list topper.

A story that is fitting given your avatar. Makes you wonder how the fish managed to get to that location.

  • 1 year later...

As winter sets in I'm reflecting on the season that was. I stumbled upon a few 'creatures' this year. Here are a few photographs of the encounters:

A rabid raccoon that visited my Son and I during a late morning round. The poor fella was in bad shape so we gave him plenty of room. First 'coon' I've seen during broad daylight.

A 'craw dad' that tussled with me next to a pond and one of his friends that was left for dead (the latter did not die in my hands).

A snapping turtle that visited me before I topped a ball into a pond on a forced carry. The 'creature' continues to get his/her revenge. I love the sludge on his tail and shell.

Any stories and/or images of your 'critter capers' this season?

little feller's so sick, he's upside down ; )

He doesn't look too pleased Sixty. At least you were smart enough to wear gloves. Those claws/jaws look like they can do some damage.

He was not a happy camper. I let him go and he cooled down. I did see one on my local course this summer as well. He was crossing a fairway to get to a pond. He was also pretty big. It was a long walk, and he was determined to get to the pond like he was on a mission. I kind of kept an eye on him as I was coming down the next fairway. I noticed other golfers were checking him out as well, and letting him do his thing. It was actually kind of neat watching him ramble on in peace, everyone just staying out of his way until he just kind of slid into the depths and disappeared. It was sort of a respect thing by everyone :) I would guess some of our friends down south do the same with alligators...

Not my story:

A friend was playing with Fred Couples when Fred used to live in Santa Barbara. He brought his son, then 6 or 7 to ride in the cart. Fred ends up shooting 59 that day.

When my friend gets home, he says, "Matt, tell your mom what happened at the golf course today"

Matt responds excitedly "I saw a caterpillar"

lol I love that story.

Nanook,

my brother and 1/2 my family are out your way. Periodically I'm sent pictures of the Alberta wilderness and it takes me back to my youth. I have designs to take my children (5 and 18 months) for a visit this upcoming summer and hope to squeeze a round of golf in at a mountain course. Maybe something near the 'Three Sisters'.
