Ah, the old charity scramble drunk-fest!!!

I see some of those scores matched up with the players swings and think why didn't they just stay in the parking lot, drink beer and fill out their scorecard there, lol!

Joking aside they are usually for a good cause and raise money. We have one coming up at my work that I play in every year that supports cancer research. A non-golfing coworker asked me the other day if I was playing in the "Tournament"? I told him this is not a "Golf Tournament" but rather a "Drinking Event" that just so happens to involve golf,,lol!!

I have seen #3 before but my story is a tad different.

A guy I know and see quite often is a member at a club hosting a tourney. I'm not sure of his skill level as we are more social friends thru our wives/girlfriends than buddies. Keep in mind he has a membership. So he asks me to play in a business acquaintance of his charity tourney. OK, I'm in. My wife tells me he only has his membership as a form of business presence and he really doesn't play so I'm thinking she is letting me know ahead of time he may be bad. This comes as no surprise as he never struck me as athletic. So fast-forward to the day of the event and he has two sets of clubs in boxes in his SUV and one empty bag. I inquire as to WTF is going on with that and he replies totally stone-faced dead-serious "I'm not sure if I'm better right or left handed so I bought both". It ended up being an interesting day I'll tell ya, those guys in the cart with that other guy feel my pain. My friends best move was getting balls to play the round with from the range stocking the cart basket with about 50. Classic day. One of the few days I actually drank on the course.

So the fact that he felt he could hit either right or left is impressive enough. Did you see any actual swings from either side. Can't imagine the sales guys face when he took a set of each. Ha

Unlimited $10 mulligans and unlimitted $20 yardsticks, we bought 2 each for our team and shot 55. Cant imagine how many yardsticks other teams bought to shoot 45.
[/quote]

Kind of figured it had to have yardsticks or string :)

There is a scramble locally that allows throws from off the green to not count against your score. Throws were $5 each and winning score was always in the mid 40s and would there would typically be a long driving woman in the group that allowed for a few "1s" on par 4s. Folks would warm up by practicing throwing the ball in the hole from off the edge of the chipping green.

Wow never played in a throwing or 1 format, think I would just have to donate the money and skip those festivities. The only one I have ever played in did allow you to purchase mulligans to which one of the 4 guys did purchase 2. I don't subscribe to mulligans whatsoever with my game, but to each their own. We did finish 2nd and even accounting for the 2 mully's he use we were still 4 shots clear of 3rd place so I didn't feel like we wronged someone out of 2nd place. I however have not played a scramble since. They are fun but it is just hard for me to justify playing in them since the rules of golf don't necessarily pertain to the format. Sounds like the one the OP played in would have been good for some comedy relief though.

He wasn't sure if he was better as he shoots pool and writes left-handed but swings a baseball bat right-handed. The swings were equally painful from both sides. Ended up "feeling" it from the left-side. He was actually a huge help on the greens as I'd line him up where I wanted exactly to see the line I'd be putting on next. Truthfully it was a fun day though, our other two guys are funny as ever and one can play a bit so we didn't end up too bad. He's the kinda guy that would tell the guy at Golf Galaxy exactly what he was up to and make it look like a normal thing. Funniest thing I ever saw. Brought his own cooler filled with Heineken to his own course too......
