I was in the grandstands behind the 17th tee box late on Friday. There was a middle-aged guy standing next to me holding his 6 or 7 year old kid so he could see. As one of the players was preparing to hit his shot, the dad whispers to his son, "Get ready to yell 'mashed potatoes'".

Seriously, this is what's it's come to.
I make no evaluation, but isn't it worth arguing that the event in Phoenix has spawned this type of behavior?
Interesting point. I can't remember exactly where or when, but it seems it was in North Carolina, maybe the old Greensboro(?), but a bit of rowdiness among the fans was taken as "unique" and "colorful", and they certainly seem to embrace it at the Phoenix WastePaper Open Classic Whatever, so it presents an interesting dilemma, doesn't it?

It's cute there, but not here. We'll pretend we enjoy it there, but not here.
How is a beer-swilling, loud mouth fan supposed to know the difference?

FORE RIGHT!!!!

IN MY OPINION:

the real culprit is on the older guy on the right. white shirt. balding. sunglasses. not even man enough to look at zach. his friend (on his right) is clearly embarrassed.

a zoomed out view. the young guy (who was previously misidentified in my opinion) is in the top right, looking down at those two.

there's also a part where nick watney is pointing as he walks over. his finger isn't pointing at the young guy in the top right corner. it stays pointing at the old bald guy as he walks off.

Just watched the DVR- The guy that was pictured on the last page is not the guy who yelled 'you suck'. He's not patting his chest, he's applauding zach's actions (he's holding a drink, so can't clap with both hands).

The guy who did it is the balder guy with a vneck white shirt and sunglasses, 2nd row, next to the kid with red pants. As zach starts to walk off, he then looks up and starts saying stuff again.

I'll try to post pics in a bit.

The bum is in a t-shirt. My local muni requires a collar. Where do they find this riff raff vermin? I hope if this is corporate stands that the guy loses his job.

Not sure if joking about the t shirt/ riff Raff vermin part? Unusual reaction to a piece of clothing.

Fans have become more, and too boisterous, and frankly need to be informed before entering the grounds that it wont be tolerated, and for even a first infraction they will be removed and banned from any future PGA event. I have little doubt that with a few ejection examples crowd behavior would improve quickly, and the worst of it is that its not a general problem,,its only a few nuts that cause the problems,,so it wont take long to thin the herd, and it wont have anything but a positive effect on the vast majority of the fans.

I wont get into what consists of an infraction, but I am sure a set of guidelines could be developed.

Didn't read all 9 pages but heres my take. 1st whats this "security" that people keep talking about? I go to 1 or 2 events a year and I don't ever remember seeing security. There is security at the gates acting as the cellphone gestopo. And their are police officers inside the ropes, usually 1-2 with each group unless its Tiger and phil then a few more. But I really can't remember seeing security everywhere (maybe thats the problem). The occasional bike cop but thats it. So reality is there just aren't enough trained law enforcement personel on the job. Which then it falls on to the shoulders of some volunteer marshal. The only way to address this is to beef up security everywhere and I can't see that happening.

As for the tour/tv......of course they love it. On some level they love the morons yelling. It gives the talking idiots on morning drive something to talk about for 6 hours a day. And as it becomes more prevelant then mainstream news outlets pick up on it and brings more viewers who tune in to see what some idiot will do next, which drive up ratings. Tv stations don't care why your watching, just so you watch. You think all those advertisers and radio execs care that 35% of Howard Stern or Rush Limbaughs audience hate and despise them and only tune in to see what they will do or say so they can run to their blog and write about it? Nope....same principle applies to tv.

It's the same reason the tour has not and will not address slow play. As long as they are getting the tv time slots and people are watching they would be stupid to fix slow play. Everyone knows that Tiger and Phil, especially when in contention drive the ratings up significantly. Why then wouldn't you (from a business standpoint) do everything to keep Tiger and Phil inside the broadcast window as long as possible?

On the shuttle bus ride from the BMW on Sunday following suspension of play, I talked to a guy that witnessed Ian Poulter taking care of business with a heckler! Apparently, the guy tried to make reference to Poulter's comments about fan screaming getting out of control, and yelled something along the lines of "Hey Poulter, I've got some tissues for you to dry your tears!" Poulter responded by saying "Come here, mate - I've got something for you, too!", and proceeded to ask security to have him removed from the premises!

I think it's more the law of numbers. The more the game grows, the larger the probability there will be instances like this.

By no means am I trying to "defend" the event here but I think that's an oversimplification. There have been stories of rowdy and unruly (i.e. inebriated) fans from tournaments for decades, and although I haven't attended the Phoenix Open in 4-5 years...as I said....I've never seen any direct altercation with a player there. We have seen many examples of direct altercations in tournaments in the greater NYC area, but it is just as unfair to blame those fans as a whole.

I think these PGA Pros are absolutely nothing without the fans. This is why I dislike Tiger. Fans take a whole day to be shuttled around, walk around, and pay to watch these guys and many of the players treat them like crap. Tiger won't sign an autograph, nor aknowledge them at all. When they do it's normally ordering them around or yelling at them. If fans want to come and yell stuff, have at it as long as it does't affect play.

Zach Johnson was a d*ck to fans on the 9th tee at Bridgestone this year. Fans were crossing the fairway at the discretion of the officials (who volunteer to be there by the way) and he was telling his caddy lay into the officials. During the wait, if a fan said something to them (which many didn't) it was as if they were pee-ons and there wasn't even a look over.

Another story about Akron:

Tiger Woods is no longer welcome at The Diamond Grill in downtown Akron after a stunt he pulled 2 years back. He and some others came in and racked up a fairly large bill, and he didn't leave a dime as a Tiger, instead he signed the table cloth (yes, the white table cloth). He walked out and the owner stopped him in the parking lot and asked what was wrong with the service and asked if there was a reason he didn't leave a tip for the wait staff. Tiger said "oh, I signed the table cloth" and the owner said " do me a favor, stay the f*ck out of my restaurant"

True story. I have hated Tiger ever since, and it goes to show how many of these guys treat fans. I will always root for the Stickers, KJ Chois, Dufs and other nice guys over these babies.

they don't play for millions unless fans like myself pay to support them. I'm not asking them to sign autographs during rounds, but being cordial and appreciative is mandatory. Many of the tour pros forget that. Let those who are expected to take care of the fans that don't behave. It looks bad when a golfer does it.

I just don't like Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson. They hide behind the cross and being family men but treat others like crap on the course. I would pay money to watch a fan deck Zach Johnson in the face and watch him cry like the baby he is. If this thread was Watney doing it I probably wouldn't even care. I've just seen Zach Johnson act like an a-hole to fans on several occasions.

They bring the fans. They show up and fans come and pay to watch them play. A bunch of fans gathering at Sawgrass to sit around the 18th hole will not bring a single pro running unless it is tournament day..
They owe you nothing my friend. They earned their way to the top. And they earned the right to have you pay to go out and watch them, respectfully, with dignity. Your apparent sense of self importance seems to be clouding your perspective.

The marshals and people working for the tournament need to do a better job of enforcing so the players do not have to.

You are mistaken if you think they are playing for giant purses without the fans watching at home and at the event.

Any NOBODY is paying to see Zach Johnson.

I've been in and out of this thread but thought I would throw something in.

Not sure if you guys heard or saw the paper but security caught someone trying to bring in a handgun on Monday AM at the main entrance gate.

The article didn't say if he was going to shoot someone though.

I copied and pasted the latest news article

I will always root for the Stickers, KJ Chois, Dufs and other nice guys over these babies.

that's why there's monday - wednesday to do all of that.....thursday through sunday they're at work trying to win millions of dollars. if you play this game then you should understand the focus it takes. some are better than others about it but to act offended about it. ok then
they don't play for millions unless fans like myself pay to support them. I'm not asking them to sign autographs during rounds, but being cordial and appreciative is mandatory. Many of the tour pros forget that. Let those who are expected to take care of the fans that don't behave. It looks bad when a golfer does it.
You are mistaken if you think they are playing for giant purses without the fans watching at home and at the event.

Any NOBODY is paying to see Zach Johnson.
Actually I PAY to see Zach Johnson. And so does my buddy who is from Iowa. He is one of my favorite players and I go out of my way to follow him. Would much rather follow guys like him, Watney and DJ around, then Tiger. Zach is one of the nicest guys on tour and I have seen him on more than one occasion interact with the fans in a positive way.

I don't blame Zach one bit but I think it is sad that he has to do this versus the PGA tour getting a handle on it by controlling the crowd. This starts with expectations for behavior when people enter the grounds in the morning.

I think what is likely to happen is that good fans will begin to stay away and the result will be smaller crowds not larger crowds.

How did Zach Johnson win? I thought he sucked?
He won because he confronted the fan, and got it off his chest and out of his head. If he'd done the 'professional' thing and kept silent, he may have stewed on it and blown the tournament.

Great job on the win Zach!
Really? You don't think he has the mental fortitude to get past that? I doubt that's the case but who knows, you could be right.

Anyway, another spin to all of this is had it not been for the heckler to light a fire under his a**, maybe he wouldn't have won the tournament.

See how easy that was?
The fact that you think he should just get past it, is no indication that I believe he wasn't capable of it. Furthermore, standing up for one's self is no vice....Whether you're an everyday Joe, or a professional golfer.

Right on, guys like him should appreciate which side their bread is buttered on. It wasnt that long ago they were playing for hundred thousand pay checks and most earned peanuts from endorsements. Superstars like Norman, Phil and Tiger lifted the profile of golfg and the purses by showing personality on the course, engaging the fans and being accessible to the media. If there were 150 Zach Johnsons on tour, they would all need a day job to make ends meet.
