Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

I had my headphones in and didn't pay them much attention. At one point, I turned around to switch clubs and the mom made eye contact with me. She asked "You're not using your driver right now, are you?". The daughter quickly said "Mom, stop!". I pretended I didn't hear her but I interpreted that she was interested in trying my driver out. Not really sure where people get the idea that it's okay to use random stranger's things. I'm also left handed and they were right handed, so I'm not sure what they could have done with the club. I should have said "Yes, if you give me a $250 deposit"

At a driving range, "You're not using your driver right now, are you?" could be the greatest euphemism for "you're not getting any action, are you?"

> Not heard, but seen. Probably only ridiculous to me, but I have watched a guy twice at the range now, practicing. He consciously practices taking the club back to the inside on his backswing and then hits either blocks or snap hooks. The practice move before hitting the ball is whipping the club inside. He was there for over an hour each time. No change in the outcome.

Sounds like my last two range sessions. Next time tell me what I am doing wrong on the range! ...lol

One of my routines I cherish more than ever now that my home course closes in December for good. Saturday morning in good weather being on the range cup of coffee in hand with a cigar watching the sun come up. I will hit a few balls mostly with wedges and my persimmon woods. I am usually in the extreme left corner of the range which is known to the local members as "Stu's Corner". Usually that is in self defense to keep the tourist hacks from shanking balls across me. Anyhow I mind my own business and enjoy the moment. One morning some Tourist came over and sorta gave me a funny look. I ignored him as I usually do. His buddies came up and he told them they needed to move down that I was smoking a cigar and he found it offensive. Now the whole range was open and is probably 50 yards wide. I was trying to ignore them when his buddy piped up "simply disgusting" I could not ignore the a$$hats any longer. I told them first off this was MY beach that I lived down here full time and owned property and paid taxes here. Further more I was a FULL TIME DUES Paying Member here and had been so for 20 years. I also told them that there were 2 options available here one was some 40 yards down the tee and the other one was there were close to 95 other courses on the Grand Strand they could play. They moved on down. They did grumble to the starter who is a friend of mine. The starter replied "what did you say or do to him?"

Now I will say I only smoke cigars on the golf course or range and if other folks had been using the range before me I would have asked before I lit up. If some that were there before me had objected I would have waited until they left before lighting up

Not heard but I saw a guy with a 15-20 foot long ball grabber snatching up all his topped balls in front of his stall the other day to rehit them. First time seeing that.

overheard this nugget after one kid's range session, to a friend who just arrived:

yeah, man, i was crushing driver 300 yards, just pumping it out there!of course this this kid really hit 5/10 cold tops, 3/10 170y worm-burners, 2/10 infield flies, and 1/10 230y power fades.

now that's how you build confidence, ladies and gentlemen.

This will be a fun one. I have 3 the really stick out......

I went to a small range and there was this guy over the top so breaking bad it was amazing that he could hit the ball. He was "flushing" them that day and he was cursing with children around. I'm F'ing tits with these irons, I'm going to take down the world. Announcing it to nobody, it was like someone had induced him with Acid. It was odd, but it pissed me off at the same time...... Kids, cursing just bothers me. Younger kid was at the range, probably about 18 swinging insanely "hard" and clearly had injured his shoulder, at the range or previously, either way he would literally fall down on the mat slam his hand and yell at himself to get up and then proceed to do it again and then fall down. It's was so freaking weirdI played golf with a former boss of mine and he would literally top 80% of his shots. I usually would play a small 9 and we could get done in 2 hours usually. This day we went and played 18, he must of shot a 150, no lie. Back to the story.... The next day I went to a local range he was there and I watched him hit some drives, ~20 and he topped them all. I did this is in the distance, it was really strange. To this day that is the single reason / fact proof positive why some people shouldn't play golf.

We have heated bays so we can hit balls in the winter. One young fellow dressed to the nines and with a very nice bag of clubs, was complaining about the range balls. After a bit, he left leaving his bag. He came back shortly with two boxes of ProV1’s he purchased at the pro shop. He proceeded to hit two dozen ProV’s onto our snow covered range. I heard him say to himself, “Much better.”

I was on the driving range a couple of months ago, practicing my wedges. Next to me there was an old man with his very young girlfriend and his golf coach. The guy basically couldn't hit the ball further than 10 yards. He was massively topping the ball, hitting the mat, and so on, but after every swing he was giving some advice to his girlfriend. At some point, the coach invited the lady to hit some balls. She barely grabbed the club and started hitting each ball like 60 or 70 yards away, with quite amazing consistency. After the tenth ball approximately, the old guy started explaining her that she needed to make a small jump before starting the downswing (like Brooks Kopeka does, he said). The coach stared at him extremely amused by the comment, but then started to follow this crazy idea of the small jump and forced the lady to practice this on each shot. I couldn't believe the situation. Two mins later the old man started hitting again, and he wanted to include somehow this jump on his backswing and after two tries he blew off the basket with balls. One ball hit the coach on his glasses and some other hit on the girl. The glasses were destroyed, and the girl started to complain because of the pain. The old guy said, "sorry" and disappeared. Two mins later came back with another 200 balls and started to hit again with this small jump. I decided to move quite far, so I'll never know if more people got hurt that day.

I was at the range one time and these two guys near me were clearly having a competition. One of them said "lets see who can hit the ball cart" that was driving around. I heard one swing and then a clunk on metal. I looked up and the guy wasn't even celebrating or happy. He just looked at his buddy and said something like "I can hit a cart from 150 yards but can't hit a f-in green from 100". I had to start cracking up. I couldn't help it.
