Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

Not on the range, but on course ...

I was in an adjoining fairway ... a guy had just hit a 100 yard drive WAY off line on a par 5. His buddy shoots the flag and tells him - without a hint of sarcasm - "You've got 405, 409 with slope."

That's not ridiculous.    It's sarcastic and comedic.   Something many of us would say.

It's brilliant!

Not at the range, but I'm so embarrassed by myself I have to get it off my back.  I started casually golfing a bit, a couple years ago(COVID golfer, yuck I know) and whenever I would get paired with people, you do the usual "hey my name is ___" blah blah blah small talk well a few times in that small talk I would tell these people that I was a scratch golfer.  Only for me to actually find out what scratch meant later on, initially I thought scratch meant you were bad, like ehh just scratch a score down for me.  I did not realize it meant you were really really good, needless to say I can't imagine what the people thought when I would step up to the tee and actually swing.  I can visualize them laughing at me now, live and learn.

Yes, that is quite embarrassing.

But who cares, you didn't know better and you'll never see these people again.

I think this is one of the funniest things I’ve read on this forum.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Sounds like most people who claim to be low handicap players tbh 😂

This is hilarious right here and I'm laughing because, too many times, I've been paired up with "that guy" throughout my years of golf.  I used to play with a guy that would be plumb-bobbing from 160 yards out in the fairway.

The best part of this IMO is that every golfer you told that to now has a core memory, and they tell that story or talk about it AT LEAST once a round.

A random guy on the practice green trying to convince me that every putt is straight.

But not what you might think.

He said he aims straight at the hole for every putt. And turns the putter face closed or open to cancel out the break. Which apparently puts spin on it, to make it go straight.

I'm not trying that, because surely he's lost the golf plot.

Had a guy next to me at the range, brand new clubs with a tour bag everything was fresh off the shelves. Couldn't hit a ball to save his life spent more time pinging them off the roof from skied shots but that's fine for any beginner to golf. Got talking to him and he did make some improvement. He taken golf up a month ago and he decided he was going to be the next Tiger. Then tells me he spent around 25k on his mothers business account for a GC Quad.

….His mother rang whilst in the range and a few "but mom.. listen mom..." and then shortly after he packed up and left. He was 35. I haven't seen him since at the range.

He wasn't referring to the lie, he was referring to the actual shot itself like distance, shape, etc. If 80% of your shots don't happen, then why do we practice....

Or the 70 year old, 35 index who’s laying 7 in the fairway 60 yards out and he’s got his range finder out shooting the flag…. That never gets old.

Overheard a while back. "Man, this wind is killing our distance! Ball isn't going anywhere."

Guy to his friends on the range. They mumble agreement.

The wind was indeed raging. 15-20 steady with gusts up to 30... from behind. Not sure what the excuse would have been if the wind wasn't going at it.

While these guys were probably not great... I have played in heavy wind that knocks down your shot, even as a "helping wind."

I saw a lady giving a clear beginner tips and it was bad advice after bad advice. ‘You have to lift the ball’ and ‘you can’t move your head at all. Lock it in place!’ I just warmed up and tried not to laugh.
