Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

It finally happened. I was at the range today and when I was walking to the grass with my son I heard him. He was talking to two other men there and giving swing advice. Then stepping up and hitting a couple then back to advice. I had to tune him out. I did stop and wipe some sweat away from my face and happen to look over as I see him hit one about 200 sign range (actually 225 the yardages are off) but he says that was closer to 300 because of the hill. What?!! I just smiled and hoped he didn't talk to me. He did try to get my attention when I was hitting my 4 hybrid because I heard him say "I could get that guy more yards if he did....." I started talking to my son at that point so I didn't hear it. I hit it 210-215 range which I'm very fine with. They are straight and I know how far all my clubs go.

Deck, I can't believe you let go of the opportunity to get more yards.

No kidding! The guy was hitting it 300!!!! 300 isn't that long (I average 335 but can't putt) but to pass up advice from a member of the 300 club is unthinkable!

Ha. I like what you did there with the "I'm super long but can't putt so that's why my handicap is so high" thing. Can't tell you how many times i have heard that on WRX over the years...

So I'm on the practice putting green today working on tempo with a metronome on my iPhone.

I notice two old guys probably in their late 50s. They must of figured I couldn't hear them when ...

GUY: "Three weeks ago my balls started to hurt. And then ... today as I am riding, I get to the 4th tee. And then my left testicle feels like it's ready to explode. So I get out and walk around and I notice the pain goes away. I just told X that I am going to walk the rest of the round and there was never any pain for the remainder. Can you believe that? What the hell do you think it could be?
FRIEND: "You going to see a doctor?"
GUY: "No." *then proceeds to talk about changing car parts or something*

Meanwhile I hear a guy zoom by on a cart saying "I can't wait for the 21 years of f&^%ing child support. I'm going to pay the b@#$% in nickles." to his playing partner.

Not on the range, but the past two days in my shop.

Guy comes in and picks up a 62 wedge. Asks me to check the lie. It's pretty standard at 64 degrees. He tells me to bend it to 66 cause a 64 lie goes about 4 yards to the right if he's 30 yards out. No problem. I bend it up.

Comes back in today and tells me we went to far. The 66 lie was going a yard and a half to far left. 65 would be perfect. Adjusted the lie and off he goes.
I think if he went with 64.7525 degrees his shot from 30 would be in the hole every time.
Just a hunch....I'll be bending this thing again soon.
I'd hire you. You understand the concept of "the customer is always right." Of course the customer is usually an idiot but when they want to give you their money, they are "always right"! Lol!
Do you have a launch monitor and hitting bay?
Get yourself some extra business. Tell him to stay and hit it right there so you can dial it in with the perfect bend for him.
We do have a simulator. And with some customers I'll go the extra mile. But sometimes I do all I can to get the customer in and out. Never know when this guy might drop a "F" bomb or two in front of another customer.

Had a guy one time pick up a driver and said "wow this thing is light. Feels like I'm holding my d**k." And he wasn't whispering. I saw another customer staring at me like " what did he say?" Those guys I try to move along as quickly as possible.

These are all such good stories. I never hear anything like them on my range.

The only really ridiculous thing I've heard that I remember clearly is a father was instructing his son and his wife at the same time and was telling them both to try to keep the shaft in perfect line with the left arm the entire swing and not to hinge the wrists at all.

Remembered a funny story from awhile back. I had a customer who always carried at least 17 clubs (sometimes it was up to 20--loved the regrip jobs) in his bag. He had Ping irons and wedges. The wedges were the old MBs. He had his set PW and MB 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, and 60. All of them at the same time.

One day I asked him about all of them. He response was either insane or genius. "This yardage is perfect for the 56," he began. He took two steps forward. "Why take something off the 56 when this perfect for the 58!" Two more steps forward. "60!" Went back to the original spot and the. Took two steps backward. "54. No sense in hittin the 56 harder."

I couldn't argue with him.

There is a guy at the range that goes quite often. Always after his shift it looks like, he comes wearing a high vis safety shirt. His ball striking is not too bad, heard him say to another he is a 3 handicap, and always giving lessons to others of what saw on youtube. I managed to dodge his advice...but today I couldn't as he approached me. He seen me hitting the ball well, but he told me if in my set up, I start the club back 6-8" from the ball (i guess he was watching Moe Norman), I will get even better contact. I decide as he's telling me this, waiting for me to try it....let's have a little fun with this guy. So I do as he says, take my backswing...and try to make contact with the ball slightly above the equator...so all my shots doing this look like crap. He watched me top 3 that went 50yards bouncing along, shook his head...and went back to his station to continue hitting balls.

I was stationed on Okinawa when I first really got into the game. Started reading books, golf stories, etc. One day I decided to hit the range and realized that I'd forgotten my shoes. "I was just reading about Sam Snead playing barefoot, I'll be fine." Went to the first stall and kicked off the flops. There were a couple middle aged Okinawan guys hitting balls next to me. Hit a few easy wedges and irons and then pulled out the driver. On my first full swing my feet went out from under me, my driver went flying behind me, and I landed hard on my butt. Okinawan guy turned around and looked at down at me. I looked back up at him and said "F%#& Sam Snead." He just muttered something in Japanese and went back to hitting balls.

A dad forcing his 5 year old son to learn a pre-shot routine. Have seen him and his wife forcing the kid to hit balls almost daily for well over a year now. Most of their sessions turn to negotiations where Jr is trying to get done sooner so he can get off the range.
This happens so much in every kid sport these days. The parents want their kid to be the next superstar and make millions without realizing he has about a 1/10th of a percent chance of being a big money pro. See similar things happen with the kids that play baseball too. Kids have become nothing more than something to brag about by overbearing idiotic parents that spend their time bragging about everything else. Same people who have 'My Child is an Honor Student at X school'. Nothing more than something to make the parents feel good about themselves.
This type of behaviour is nothing short of child abuse. The real sting in the tail is that the parents themselves were never motivated enough when they were young to work hard, but then force these so called work ethics on their kids. If my kids show an interest in anything I will totally support them as far as they want to take it, but if they want to spend their childhood havng fun and not taking things seriously that's fine too.

Somehow forgot this part in my first post...

A few weeks ago, I was at a range and had this idiot trying to give me unsolicited swing advice. Never mind the fact that watching his swing told me he was a high handicapper...At least a 20...Anyway, after I ignored his advice (and he was very insistent...) He grabs his driver and yells to his buddy in the cart barn (and it was obviously meant for me) "Watch this...Driver off the deck" He then drops a ball, says "launch pad!" loudly enough for me to hear it and proceeds to top one about 30 yards...He drops another and says something like "rocket launcher!" and this ball goes about 20 yds. One more time for good measure "launch deck!"...This time it goes about 150 yds and 70 to the right...You can't make this stuff up...All I could think of was that part in Along came Polly where they are playing basketball and the guy is chucking them up from everywhere, missing and saying all kinds of ridiculos stuff..."Rain dance!"...

Ended up hitting balls this afternoon, loads of instruction handed out by those who should not be giving it. The odd part was none of it was in English. I don't know if it was United Nations day at the range or what but I counted 5 different instructions in 5 languages. Before I get bashed, to each there own but I found it amazing that poor instruction in multiple tongues is still poor instruction. I didn't need to understand what was being said to know the guy giving instruction should not be.
