Couple of things that did suit well in my opinion with this Long Drive Contest. First of all the tee box was aiming to the right. When you saw them hit most of the shots were misssed right. Yeah they were hitting fades but the ball tracker started the ball at the middle and faded off OB right. Second they were hitting off a very elevated tee. I know they still hit it far but the elevated tee has to of given them an extra 25 to 35 yards.

From what I was told the cameras angles didn't help with how the orientation of the grid looked...much straighter than it appeared. Granted the teebox was elevated but the only thing that was different was the carry distance. Look at previous years from mesquite...much more roll, so ultimately it equaled out maybe a little less because the grass was extremely long

I thought the grass looked pretty long.

Art Sellinger said the the shot was "almost straight." I'll probably buy that but I believe the problem was the visual effect of having the curving racetrack and grandstands running right along side the grid that was giving the guys fits.

We hear a lot about "not suiting my eye" and that's probably what was going on with these guys.

Then again.....it's gotta be hard to hit any fairway swinging 148 MPH.

Mesquite, NV Elevation is 1,600 feet. Not sure why people are ranting about doing this at Sea Level. If the elevation is the same for everyone it doesn't matter if you put these guys at high elevation in Denver the playing field is even.

Bottom line is the guy who hit the ball the best all night won and that's how it should be.
Where would that be? You need a grid over 400 yards, you need a place to put spectators, the venue needs to be shut down for about a month. What place do you know of like that with the backdrop of a Las Vegas, this is a world championship after all, with a prize of $250,000, can't be a golf course hole or your local muni.

149 swing !
222 ball speed is insane.
Fun to watch ... Vegas is a great venue for this IMO
Not sure why the finals couldn't be on one of the golf courses right on the strip. Redesign a hole to allow for this event or tee off from one hole down another

Well, not being emotionally invested in this aspect of the sport, the entire venue last night turned me completely off, and I generally love going for the long ball, and those guys who can generate 135++ mph intrigue the heck out of me.

I'm tired of seeing the contrived +70ft elevated tee, w/ altitude and essentially in a wind tunnel. I know almost every other golf venue in the world has figured out portable, rentable, stadium seating. Find a field. Prepare it to your delight. Ship in some portable stadium seating. Put them on a flat grid, and let the chips fall where they may.

Jumped the shark.

Alternately, go to Colorado and have them hit from 11,000' off a 1/4 mile cliff to a 200yd wide grid...

Agree but, did we really see any real adjustments? There were 3 different "tee boxes" on the platform. They also said the grind was 50 yards wide, not the 60 yards like Mesquite. Something had these guys messed up and didn't make for great TV.

Without a doubt the stupidest location to date. Maybe next year they can use a airport runway with sand for the runway for the fairway landing area. What's next a NASCAR race at Pebble Beach?

Too bad these talented guys have been forced to participate in a clown show.

TOTALLY AGREE !!!!!!!

I've talked this to death today ... but it was hard to watch to the extent of almost being embarrassed and frustrated for guys who I KNOW just wanted to get on a real grid / tee box and just mash the ball.

Watching OB after OB was sooooooooo entertaining

ATTA BOY to Tim & Krank though ... He earned it

ATTA BOY to Mike Breed & Holly Sonders too !!! ... They did all they could to give it a good tourny feel.

Being there was INSANE....It def looked worse on TV for grid location and it being angled but ti was not that bad. I have pics of it and start up the left side fade it in and your set. Just like in Mesquite finals, right side is always hotter so they all aim there. The tee box being elevated was awesome as well...That gives the all eyes on your feel and yoru in your own little world. I was up there after taking pics and boy i wanted to hit some lol there were spots to tee up the ball setu in different locations on the box all aiming down the center of the grid. So those the platform was showing down the track, they were able to line up dead center. Lots of balls did just miss out right by couple feet, and the ones that were pulled or pushed right or faded off more, of course those wont find the grid, just like tiger and others wont find the fairway with those shots. Do you all go a bust the PGA tour commish for have most PGA Pros and number ones in world miss the fairway? Doubt it....I loved...it was awesome being there, idk how it was on TV havent seen it yet but once it shows we will see then. Nothing beats being there in person....And they did do a study on the hieght and conditions to see what distnace would be at on level ground, and they would have been in the 395-405 range which is STILL KILLED........As for OB shots being more this year, can you say you hit grid every time on elevated par 3 or hit the fairway on a elevated par 4?? IDK guys....its the first year and its been amazing so far....so relax and lets see what happens this next year.

too bad they went for the big money shot with the elevated Motor Speedway thing. Mistake by association. Longdrive is not NasCar. And any 9th grade geometry student will tell you the longer time the ball is in the air the more wayward is has the opportunity to become. Some of these moonshots felt like they were aloft for 9 seconds. Thats a second longer than a big rope on flat ground. Sadlowski looked totally disheartened as if he had lost before his first swing. He needed to accept the bizarre conditions and play for the fences. He is the standard by which all these guys measure themselves year in and year out imo. He is essentially the founding father of modern longdrive. Well unfortunately George Washington showed up this year sans his white powdered wig and minus his trusty musket. The Holly girl reminds me of a Keno pit shill, there to get the guys excited so they will man up in the next round. Looked like she hired a Mexican contractor on the cheap to stucco her face in the SouthWestern style. Who was doing the consulting on this gig? Anybody? The whole thing felt embarassing for the players. I do hope a trend is not in now and only the big hogs start winning these things. I mean if your 6'6" and the other finalist is 280 lbs 6'4" the not so subliminal message to the public is 'for giants only'.

I just saw the broadcast and thought the thing was a total farce. The setting was awful as many people have said (a race track??). The commentary was uninspired, and the competition itself made long drive competition seem like a joke. I mean, you advance to the finals by putting ONE ball in the grid!? It was just terrible TV watching these guys hit the ball all over the planet in hopes of hitting a single ball somewhere in that huge grid.

I thought some of the events in Mesquite were interesting, but once again big money wins while the sport loses. It's too bad, because the competitors work hard at this, and I think they deserve a better format and setting to display their talents.

You can't get good commentary on a long drive competition. It's like the home run derby. After 50 bombs of the same thing, nothing can make it interesting.

The setting was awful and it was one of the worst LD's I've seen ever. The longest man did not win the luckiest one did. Shame on LDA for creating the cartoon that was the Remax LD.

The longest man did win. And, Burke hit the ball extremely well other than 6 out of the first 7 balls. Anyone who says anything against the longdrivers, you have no idea how tough that grid was to hit. Burke was by far the most consistent and competitive there was. He was near 220+ ball speed all night long.

The straightest man won. No one could keep it anyone close to the grid so they started to dial it back to just get a number on the board, Burke included. And for guys that like to shape it like Miller and Sadlowski it was downright AWFUL. Hopefully they learned from that disaster.

J13 your totally wrong about Burke being only the straightest he was the longest that night and no one was gonna catch him he had +220 ball speed that night. Me and Donnie Parker are on the same page. Go back and watch the trackman numbers from all competitors and it's not even close Burke was killing it.
