Wow! I'm just amazed that everyone on WRX swings as fast as Woodland and Bubba
Actually I believe both are in the mid to upper 120's even 130. I'm not posting to brag just merely provide factual data for better insight for people that may want to post applicable responses. Obviously their swings are much more efficient with higher smash factors than mine. Believe me I'd lower club head speed in an instant to create more consistency. I think you'll find many posters on here have similar club head speeds as me. I'm 35 in great shape and have been playing golf for 25 years, I don't really think my stats are in any way out of the ordinary. They say jealousy is the most sincere form of flattery, so I'm flattered. Thank you.

But I digress.

Im sorry you feel 'everyone on wrx swings as fast as woodland and bubba'. Thats just not the case. Only the OP and myself do. ;) I personally like the guy who said my 7 iron is 171 (OP is 170).
Seriously, a quick soapbox for you- theres simply no point in seeking advice for something that doesnt apply to me.
Imo, efficient, higher swing speed is simply a product of taking care of your body and having a competitive athletic background. Its something that just happens. Not difficult or something I TRY to do. As drvrwdge mentioned, hes in great shape at 35 and has played for 25yrs. I same at 39 but only 2.5yrs.

Maybe Ill really fuel the fire and change my name to ' DrvrPutt'. Touche' Drvrwdge!

Thanks for your time, carry on

And there in lies my true problem. Access to a good experienced club fitter.
What town/city do you live in? I'd be happy to check all our information about good clubfitters around the country to at least try to see if there is someone within at least some reasonable proximity to where you live. There may not be but I have access to knowing a lot more of the clubfitters and who is good and not so good than do most people, so I would be willing to check and see what your options might be.

Mr Wishon is always super knowledgeable on this subject. I have gone back and forth between S and X shafts, but always found that I controlled X better. It is all a matter of preference for me.

This is great. Some people simply generate more club head speed than others. When I first started hitting golf balls, my dad taught me to hit it hard first and then we worked on control. But how else would a man who is now 51 years old and still hits a 3 iron 250 teach his son?

I think too many guys are afraid of X's. Only X shafts I hated the feel of were Project X's ... hello tendinitis

I have played S400's for a long time but I tried X100's for a season and they were no harder to hit for ME. Great feel

I'm only a 108-110 guy but aggressive and steep with the shorter irons. 180 is a pretty standard 7i for me. What I would give for 10mph more with the driver to get the carry up in the 290's ... that would be fun !!

X's in all the woods. Nippon 1150x's coming in s55's. Staying with TI DG s400's in the Vokey's

I suggest buying a single X shaft and testing it directly against your S. You can always flip it back .. .cheap experiment.

X's do offer a lot more accuracy and for me help with the left side miss

Stiff with full swings offer too much vibration and hook spin for my liking. Distance wasnt ever enough to notice, but with the ball flying straighter, subtle draws and fades I believe the x100s are longer because the ball is simply taking a straighter, flatter line from point a to b.

I'm just amazed it took till post #9 before someone posted this crap. I dream of a day where someone can post their swing speed and get actual clear concise help rather than getting random comments by people that contribute nothing to the thread.
I was hamstrung in my early days online partly for this sort of thing. When I got online (Kellygreen and I registered on another forum on the exact same day in 1999) in the golf world, I was a mid-30s, weight-lifting former softball/baseball player. Everyone told me to go stiff, you don't need anything more than that, etc... one guy called me a liar when I posted my club distances.

Then one day I found a driver with no flex designation that I hit great. It later proved to be 2X. I tried Xstiff shafted irons and hit them better than my own. And so on.

And I wasn't then (definitely aren't now) anywhere near the longest hitter in the group of folks I've met online. It's even worse for the REAL long hitters. I spent years trying to talk a local 125-130mph+ guy (dabbled in long drive) into even trying Xstiff, with only mild success; he'd also gotten the same conditioning over the years.

So it would be great if some folks could keep the noise to themselves, and let guys like the OP get the info he needs.

/end rant :)

Northern California?

Northern Cal is pretty large so if you are not in the San Francisco area, let me know the actual town/city and I can look things up to see if there is someone with good experience with whom to work.

In SF for sure, Joe's good. I also very much recommend John Taylor in SF as he's really good too.

If you are closer to the East Bay part of the Bay Area, then I would recommend Michael Clark in Berkeley.

So looking through the WITB pieces here on golfwrx.com most pro's play x flex in their irons whether it be the x100, 6.0/6.5 or a KBS x. When I do the static fittings for True Temper and KBS it puts me in S for both (the S+) in KBS and a step softer in the wedges. My driver SS is 118-121 but with my orns I usually swing about 80% and I am pretty sure my distances are on par with most tour player 7i = 170 yds. My question being are they playing the X flex because of weight, spin and trajectory control or is there another reason to play to stiffer iron shaft that I am missing. I currently play Apex Plus's in the "5" flex but having the static fittings put me into an S has me wondering..

I do play X in all my woods and hybrids as you can see in my signature.
Once SS is matched to shaft profiles, it's all about "feel" for me. I can play X100 or S in irons, but opt for PX 6.0 because I like a more stout feeling shaft with minimal spin. I also like real heavy "E0" swing weights in wedges. Due to my fast transition and tempo, I switch between X, S+ or S in driver and 3wd, difference is driven by weight.

I think you missed my point. This forum is called wrxclub TECH. Things like spin rate, AOA, launch, ball speed should be referenced. I really can't offer advice when you reference yourself to pros and give a swing speed with driver when asking for iron shaft help. Excuse me if I sound unreasonable.

Uh, I think you should re-read the heading of this forum. Club Techs, Techs is short for Technicians. There is an S at the end of that TECH.

I've hit both S300 and X100 quite a bit and frankly, I don't notice much difference in performance. Distance, accuracy, feel are all pretty similar to me. I figure if guys are stumped between those two shafts, they're probably over-thinking it.

Which means you're either pretty smooth and fit into X normally, or you're somewhere in between S and X and aren't flex sensitive. :)

There was a time when I couldn't play DGS, my tempo and shaft load were unseemly. The tempo and/or transition are smoother now, and I've lost a bit from age, so I can play either.
