Most bizarre Craigslist transaction to date

So i frequently buy and sell on craigslist. I look for jobs, golf stuff, guitars (now) and just whatever my wife says we are in the market for. Anyways I put an old bag i had up on craigslist for free to anyone that might have wanted. I bought it and a few older clubs to sit in the corner of my office as a decoration. My wife and i are moving next month, so i am trying to cut my junk down to a bare minimum. I had a guy text me about the bag, and he said he would have to come out of town and wondered if I could meet him halfway. Normally I would do this, but I was studying for an exam last night and didn't have the time to spare. He was really wanting the bag last night for his own reason which is completely fine. I told him he would have to meet me here in town where I live. He said he had about a 40 minute drive, and would head my way eventually. We agreed to meet at the drug store down the road from my apartment. I always meet in very public places just because you never know about people.

 

This is where this thing gets weird. So we meet up. We get out shake hands introduce ourselves the normal introduction jazz that goes alone. I then get the bag out of the trunk, and he looks it up and down and is like i am not sure if i want it or not. I said that's fine man, but if you don't want it i'll probably just donate it back to the mission. He is like I drove all this way, so Ill take it. he then ask me for $10 for gas money to come get the bag. I said what do you mean? He says basically that he had to drive 40 minutes here and back to come pick up this bag, and he would like some money for gas since I didn't meet him halfway. I said i am giving this thing away for free, and I am not giving you gas money. He gets all upset, and is like you know gas is $3.50 per gallon right now. I said yeah i know and it sucks and tried to make a joke out of it. He then is like this isn't how i do business. He said if he is selling something and they have to drive a long ways he always knocks a little bit off to help cover the cost of fuel. I told him i completely understand that, but I was not charging him anything. He said some curse words, and gets back in his truck. I said sir do you want this bag or not. He said just throw the thing in the back. i did and he floored it out of the parking lot.

 

I now thing i should have just kept the bag, but i was just so confused and frustered by this man that i just wanted to be rid of the thing. This is a new one and wanted to share it with you guys. I still am laughing about this.

Definitely a good call meeting him in public. Don't want that clown knowing where you live that's for sure. I have had some interesting craigslist encounters, but nothing close to this.

Some people just do not know how to interact in real life. Most of these types of people buy things on craigslist, QVC, infomercials, etc...

I deal with these types of people every day and you just have to laugh it off at how scary this world is. Glad your able to do that!

hahaha he wanted you to pay him for taking the bag. That's so awesome. I'm going to have to try that somewhere as a joke. I am planning on taking my wife out to a restaurant that is out of my way. Wonder what the restaurant manager will say?

That's insane. On a bit more horrific note we had a Craig's list transaction end in murder over a vehicle a couple of weeks ago in my area. That shut down my dabbling on Craig's list. Word to the wise...be safe out there.

Never had a weird transaction like that (thank God). I always have another person with me and definitely always carry my pistol just in case. Never know these days. Did this happen on the first of the month? Bc that's when the crazies usually come out.

Similar funny thing

My daughter's have a garage sale to raise money for cancer. I empty my basement of all the stuff I never touch including a 10 year old telescope. Never used, worth about $250

A guy buys it for $2. I don't care, it's for cancer. Comes back an hour later and says a couple of the spare lenses are missing. So I hunt around in the basement, find some extra pieces, call the older gent back and he comes over to pick them up. Goes home.

Calls me back again, still one piece missing. He tells me he needs this piece so he donate this telescope as a new item to a charity auction. I was flabbergasted

I learned one thing, you get some real "characters" trolling garage sales

BTW, the daughters raised $242 for cancer so that was a win

I stopped giving stuff away on CL. The scent of 'free' seems to bring out the true crazies. Even if it's worth nothing to me and I'd be happy to give it away to anyone who asks I'll still list if for $5 or $10 bucks or whatever. If no one wants after a week or two it I'll donate it, or if someone says they want it but they're broke I'll happily give it to them at no cost, assuming they can write an email without sounding like an absolute psycho. CL is a weird place man.

Usually there arent many weirdo's like that in the "golf scene" cuz its a upscale sport that costs a lot of $$ to get involved in.

I'm not speechless too often...congratulations you have succeeded. I have no idea how I would have reacted. There's some scary stuff on CL. You know it's an issue when I'm carrying a primary and my secondary when I'm meeting anyone off CL.
