Starting a new adventure . . . Minimalist Golf

Hey guys,

 

I got bored at work today and started reading up on minimalist golf. needless to say I am starting my journey trying this out.

 

To do this I have the following on the way:

 

Wishon 949 - 4 wood w/ Wishon Black 85 X and Superstroke Multi Traction Splash Black and White Grip

Wishon 560 MC - 4,6,8,PW w/ Wishon Stepless Stiff tipped 0.5" Superstroke Multi Traction Splash Black and White Grip

Wishon Micro PCF - 56 degree w/ Wishon Knockdown Wedge Shaft Superstroke Multi Traction Splash Black and White Grip

Wishon S2R #1 Counter balanced 39" putter with 17" Superstroke Splash Lite Black and White Grip

 

These new beauties will be getting toted around in a Sun Mountain Swift X

 

I guess as well as just bragging about the new gear I've got coming, I was looking to see what advice or stories other members on hear have to share about minimalist golf.

 

Anything that I am missing or ways I can take this to the next level.

Well funny story as to why there is no 7 iron. Early this season I broke my 9 Iron, so my short game kind of revolved around 8 iron and pw. The goal for this set is to be at 7 clubs, with my gapping I am pretty confident that I can still post good scores.

I am a long ball hitter so we shall see how this turns out.

My minimalist bag: G25 driver, 4-wood and 23* hybrid, AP1 6, 8-iron and PW, Vokey 55* SW, putter. Sun Mountain Swift-X. I play this set up pretty much all the time now. Walk, hit, repeat.

Welcome to the Wishon family. The only problem I see is not having a full set of Wishon's!!!


If you are a pretty decent player you will notice one stand out feature of the Wishon 560 MC's The distance control is flawless. This will be a huge advantage to your minimalist objective. You won't get a jumper if you happen to really pure a shot and it is very easy to control your distances by simply choking down or adjusting ball position. The 949 is a beast and is very hot and is just a beautiful fairway wood at address.

Sadly there is another mix and match brand name bag that I play sometimes too.

I felt the same way when I almost took the 60 out of my 14 club bag, then one day I looked at what clubs I really hit and more importantly like to hit (Can work both ways, flight and hit 3/4 / 1/2 shots with) It was a surprisingly easier exercise than I thought

Interesting - I would bring Driver, 4H, 8i, SW, Putter - 5 clubs.

Very cool. I've taken a few looks at my bag and have figured out which clubs I tend to play more than others. I've never actually thought to put that to use and use only those few clubs. I'll have to give this a shot. That being said....

I'd try taking out clubs one at a time each round and see how far you can go without sacrificing your scores.

The only reason I am leaving driver out of the bag is I can comfortably hit my 4 wood 250 yards and straight and I have no issue hitting it off the deck. In my eyes driver is only good off the tee and I need 250 yard lay ups more than I need 300 yard carries

Thats only one club short of a full bag lol. The way I am looking at it is if I carry half the number of allowed clubs I am playing pretty close to the bare minimum I can get away with

Bubba Watson's minimalist bag is his 4 hybrid with 3 balls. I read somewhere today, can't recall.

Sounds ok except I can't figure out how did he hit it out of the bunker.

A pro can hit a hybrid with pin point accuracy so I don't think bunkers are too big of an issue, but if I were to be in a bunker with only a hybrid I would take the putting approach at it. This is of course dependent on being in a bunker with very little to no lip.

Guess I don't see the point in this "minimalist" setup. Is it to reduce weight? To speed up play? Just to say I shot sub 80 with 5 clubs ? Etc? I think this came is tough enough with 14. Lol Heck i would love to carry 16 If I was allowed. I'd also throw in a thriver type club for tee only shots and a 64* wedge

For me it comes out of necessity and the challenge. I work within the golf industry so I can only play at very odd times of the day and for me I know I can walk the course far quicker than carting it. I also have troubles playing 3/4 and 1/2 shots I am hoping this exercise will make that problem go away and help me prepare for my PAT's. Also from the few articles I have had the chance to read this should make practicing easier which is something I struggle with as well

I have walked a few holes after hours with just 6 iron, sw, putter, and shoot about the same scores as I do with my full bag.

I play most of my early golf with 3,5,7,9 3w, driver, putter as a 'full' set.

I do a 3 club challenge a couple times a year, that's minimal.

Have fun either way, that's all the matters.

We did a 3,2,1 tournament in our Game Improvement class played 3 rounds taking out 1 club each round was a hole lot of fun but playing 6800 yards with nothing but a 7 iron was pretty difficult. What is your 3 club set up?

This also about excersise and being able to focus on the next shot you have to play instead of running back to the cart and not thinking about golf until you get up to the ball.

With today's technology I say knock out the driver all together it is one of the most limited use clubs in our bags as far as I am concerned and today's 3 woods are so hot and forgiving. thoughts?

Only if you can hit a 3/4 at least 240/250. Gotta be able to get around that distance off the tee or you're going to have to move up a tee box... or have an unbelievable short game.
