That looks pretty good. What are the dimensions - looks like you have excess net - would you go taller if you had the space?

Taller and wider would have been good, but I wanted it to be able to fit through doors. THe lack of height doesn't impact me for now because I don't have enough room to even flop a 60* over that 6.5 ft bar due to the room only being 12 ft long. I do think the real net return is closer to 7.5x8, not 6.5x6. I definitely have about 2.5 ft of excess netting at the bottom, so I ran a rope through it at the vertical posts and tied it taught so the extra doesn't impact how the net performs.

I had a similar project, tried an indoor net, and it really killed my swing. From what you're saying you can't use anything less than a 5-iron. That implies to me that you don't have enough room between you and the ceiling to hit anything longer than a 5 iron. What happened to me, and I'm still fighting it, is I got extremely flippy. I was always so concerned about hitting the ceiling tiles above me (trust me I hit them many a time), that I figured maybe I'll flip the wrists and kind of wrap the club around my body quickly. I'm usually an extender so I REALLY got into a bad groove. Now I'm experiencing the punishment. I really don't recommend this unless you have a lot of room to really feel free and swing and extend. Just my 2 cents.

I practiced one winter under a low ceiling and killed my swing as well because of it. I could be wrong but I think I can already see it starting to happen to you looking at your "hesitant" follow-through in the video.

Yurp, Ive had problems releasing the club and following through even before I built this. I lose everything way right. I think part of it is I had only hit 30 balls into the net when I capped the video so I was still scared of smashing a club into a wall/electronics. Hopefully gets better as I realize Im safe to swing away.

I'll be sure to take full followthrus and release properly.

Crossbeams are 6' each
From bottom to top, the pieces are:
24" (bottom horizontal), 28" (first vertical piece), 26" (diagonal piece), 24" (second vertical piece), 20 (top horizontal)"

Add about an inch or two to all those based on the joint connectors, and you end up with 6'4" square, 2'6" deep.

You can play with any or all of those dimensions and even tweak the ratios a little bit depending on your net size. Id recommend a net with a rope border that is adjustable if you want to really make a net that will return balls properly. The netreturn net is not a square and plays a key role in returning the balls properly.

If you hit the ball well you will be hitting the net in the same area. The spin on the ball will take a toll on your net. Sooner or later you will blow a hole in your net and by the looks of it the ball might end up outside or punch a hole in the drywall if your lucky. As you get more comfortable with your net setup you will probably start to ramp it up.

In a room that small, why not just get a curtain rod and hang the net off there? No need for a frame. Then you could easily take it down.

Only going to be in this apt for another year, and the original plan was to rent a garage and set up a little golf academy in there, but they wanted 100 bucks a month for it

Am happy with the result other than the fact I need another 2 feet of room length and another foot or so on the ceilings to swing all the way up to driver... guess I need to get a nicer place :P

Thanks. My assumptions on the dimensions were pretty close. I built a frame last night based on another design on golfwrx, but I didn't care much for it when completed. I'm going to use your design and morph the two.

Tell you what, I got a Net Return which I do consider to be the best on the market and your reproduction is scary close. That is and amazing job that you did with that thing. Are you like a nuclear engineer or something? Just kidding but seriously that is an amazing self help project. I can relate to the limited space deal though. I have a brand new New Return set up in my basement that has never had a ball hit into it cause of the low ceiling. The house plans originally allowed plenty of room for my personal little driving range/golf studio but you know how plans go. I bought the thing out of anticipation and then like Custer the plan went to crap. Still sitting down there so I can at least admire it and think about what could have been. Guess the good news is the wife just got a new job on the other side of town so maybe we'll be relocating to a place with a space large enough to accomodate the net.

BTW, Net Return is the greatest of the line and great for other sports as well. Hope your's works out well for you and I'll be hanging on to mine just thinking about "what if". Again, congratulations on a helluva project! You picked the best to immitate and did a damn fine jon of it!

When I was young we didn't have nets and PVC. We had sticks, straw and lots of rocks.

But seriously, I propped my mattress up against the wall in the winter and hit balls into it every day. Not as sophisticated as what you've put together, but cheaper...
