Frequent player of a private club with my buddies and am amazed at the frequency of 5somes on the golf course

To me it's tacky. And quite frankly all that is wrong with golf. I understand it's a private club and they could run 7somes out if that's what the members desired, but it's still quite the conundrum.

I don't care if you're all great players or how fast you are. If a 3some is behind you and you don't get the hint and we drive around you, don't get peeved. The golf course is open in front of you.

If it is a private club why not bring up the issue with the club?

It sounds like you're not the member. Why play there if it bothers you so much?

I have to admit, I have played in numerous 5somes, but is it extremely inconsiderate to allow a 3some or 4some or etc. to have to wait on your group. The club should tell them that if they are going to play in anything more than a 4some, they need to allow faster groups to play though.

I am a junior golfer at a private club and sometimes in the evenings when its not too busy the pros will let us go off with groups of 5, or sometimes 6. We typically only do this if the course is nearly deserted. And we always let members through behind us if they are waiting. As long as its not busy and you let people through, fivesomes at private courses are fine IMHO.

What looks funny is a fivesome or even sixsome (yeah, they're allowed) with 4 or 5 caddies along with them. Seen that a few times at my club in Dallas. Looks like a Ryder Cup match or something'. No biggie, though. Just go around them, course is never too crowded.

5 golfers + 5 caddies + 5 umbrella girls
gets a little crowded on the greens.

I am not the member. But it bothers the member in the group. And I have to concur. It's just inconsiderate. and then an attitude when we skip a hole to get in front.

Uh.....er Ok. Thanks for the manners lesson that was totally unnecessary. This isn't some swank golf club. It's a great track that is barely even a private club. All I have to do is agree to pay $300 a month and I'm a member. Period. Dot. The end.

I'm more than happy to play as a guest. And I'm not the one complaining per se...but the member does. Just making internet conversation.

The first time I saw fivesomes or sixsomes playing was about tens years ago on a private course. I was interested in joining but I thought no way I would be happy playing with these large groups of players holding up the course. I was looking for a place I could play quick rounds. I was a quest there so I didn't complain about it the day I played. I asked if it was the norm to have these bigger groups out there playing and I was told yes. So I figured that was what I CC was all about. People paying for the right to do as they please. So I passed on joining.
I think fivesomes are becoming a problem in golf. I never ran into any on a public course until the last few years. Now the roadblocks are showing up more frequently. I don't care what someone says about a group of five playing fast . A group of four playing fast will be held up by them because it's just common sense four can play faster than five with all things being equal. I wouldn't really care about five in a group but every fivesome I ran into wouldn't let us play through so I am totally against five in a group.

I've played in 5 somes many times and have to say that we regularly play in 3.5 hours. Pace of play isn't necessarily a numbers in the group issue so to say that 5 somes are the problem is ridiculous. There are many days that we are waiting on 4 and even 3 somes. That's as bad as saying walking slows pace of play.

I'm a member at a club and we play fivesomes quite frequently. IMO, fivesomes don't slow down play, slow players slow down play...
I know a group of guys that play 5 every morning during the week, first off, and walk a 6700 yard layout in just under 3 hours. Too fast for my liking, but if we see them in the morning, me and my friend always let them play first.

I always find the upward tic of negativity quite comical.

I'm more than pleased he invites me to his club
I'm more than pleased that when the MEMBER is also annoyed he suggests that we just go around and skip said hole to return to play later
I'm NOT pleased that the 5some reacted like we had just killed puppies.

Public or private, the problem doesn't lie in how many players are in the group, it's the pace the group plays at. Would you have been ok if the group holding you up had only three? We play quite often in fivessomes (and occasionally six) and play extremely fast. But if someone comes up behind we let them through.

I know what you're saying OP, that the norm is that five will be slower than four, but in all actuality I really think it more comes down to the makeup of the group. There are many, many instances where the five will be faster than four or sometimes even three. But a larger than normal group should be paying extra attention to make sure they don't make anyone wait. If you get special considerations to play in a bigger group, then you also have to be extra considerate.

My club allows 5-somes without issue. I can look at the tee sheet online for a Saturday morning and tell you where it's going to be slow by who owns the tee times without even knowing how many are in the groups. Players are slow, not the number of them.

I belong to a private club and we have two courses. Fivesomes are allowed on both. Like many here, I can look at the tee sheet & know which groups will be slow, and they are not usually the fivesomes. Most (not all) fivesomes are good about letting groups play through if they are indeed waiting on every shot and there's definitely an opening in front of the fivesome. Heck, at my club there are threesomes of men who will let the fivesome of women I play with through because they know we are faster than they are & they don't want us to watch them look for lost balls everywhere. :D
i've never seen a 5some at a club, i've been a member of 3
Yesterday there were two groups of 8 on my home course which is a private track. After October 31st we see groups of 5, 6, 7 and yes, even 8 players.

The groups that have over 4 players always let other groups play through so it's really not a problem for them to be out.

The bigger problem is when we run into fivesomes at public courses. The norm is to go around them since most don't let you play through.
