Not quite as simple as the above comment, but the same idea. Its not that they're bad irons because they're not but just old. The new technology in todays irons are simply worth the upgrade. Not saying go out and spend $1000 on brand new irons but keep your eyes open for stuff coming up for sale on the BST forum as a lot of guys will be dumping last years stuff for shiny new gear.

So I've played my s59 for a year or so really like them but being a broke college student I am was just wondering if I should be on the look out for a deal on a newer set of irons.. I shoot anywhere from 81-93 depending on the putting..
[/quote]

So, you like the ones you already have and you're broke, but you're asking strangers who know nothing about your game or your swing if you should buy newer ones?

Welcome to WRX :welcomeani:

FWIW, I think the S59's look cool as heck. I'd play them myself if they were a little more round on the bottom. I like 'em a little more round on the bottom...

The S59's are great clubs. They are very solid and fairly easy to hit. Even if you get something else, keep the S59s. You won't get much in trade anyway. Always look at clubs at least 2 years old for the best value. The latest iron technology is overrated. It's not about how far but about how consistent in distance and direction.

You really like your clubs and you are broke but wonder if you should buy new clubs?

I could understand this if you have money to burn and hate your clubs, you might think you need to look at something different or I love my clubs and have money to burn. But broke and really like does not add up to needing new equipment.

A golf club ho in the making.

The s59 is arguably the best Ping S series head. (s59-55). Bubba Watson still played them as recently as last year. In regards to technology, I dont know if that applies to this type of club because its a "players" iron. There is not a significant upgrade in the s59 from 2004 and the s55 from 2013 other than slight changes in design. Its more of a marketing thing. Yeah yeah perimeter weighting, forging, blah blah...all I hear is marketing.

However, if your shooting in the 90's from time to time a game improvement iron that has some modern technology may serve you well.

I played these sweet babies from 2004 up until late 2012 and decided to switch to my current set. I still think back to them from time to time wishing I still had them. But from the sounds of your scoring, you may be better off with something slightly more forgiving.

Thanks for the input guys.. And if I had the funds id be such a club ho lol I think I'm gonna start saving and looking for some i20s I think that was the popular set this year.. I ultimately wanna get my handicap low enough to play some small local tourneys and I don't think my 59s fit the groove rules now days?

To each his own, but I shoot similar scores to you and have never considered playing an s-series Ping iron. I struggle with consistent ball striking, but it's G-series for me. I could play i-series (and I have), but the G's make the game more fun for me. That's just my take, but good luck with whatever you decide.

Not pushing Taylormade on you, it is just what I have personal experience with. If you have $225 for a budget, you may want to take a look at the 2011 TM MC's. They are fully forged and were an awesome set of sticks. Were very forgivable for a "player" type club. After playing the smaller head profile of the S series, it may be difficult to go to a more game improvement type iron. With the new series launching, they can be had for under or at your budget with some searching!

Keep the S59's. I'm one of the biggest club ho's of them all. I've tried everything new and old (Hogans, eye 2's, zing's, cobra amp forged, taylormade, Adams, Titleist, and the list goes on). I decided to try the S55's. I'm not going to lie, when I had them on the launch monitor I was loving them. Couldn't grasp the fact that they were a thousand dollars. Even on ebay no cheaper than 600. I starting walking around Golfsmith wondering where my club journey was going to take me. When I saw a sale rack of used clubs. A set of S59's in good shape just needed some cleaning. For 99.93 I had to investigate. Took them over to the launch monitor and hit about 50 balls. I was hooked. I regularly shoot in the low 100's high 90's. these in such little time have helped me get close to the 80's. Don't listen to some of the ppl on here who tell u that u need the G series or anything else. Game what works for u

Old adage- Clothes make the man. True or not. No one says clubs make the player. Stick with what you have. Like OPs forget the hype.Work on your game. When you're done school, have a job then go to a Pro/fitter, especially as a lefty, and get yourself clubs made to order for you. Don't become a Ho, at least until you can really afford it. Or going another way go to the good used sites- Global Golf, 2nd Swing, 3 Balls, BSt on WRX, e-Bay etc. and take advantage of the depreciation factor. As someone said, 2/3 year old clubs lack nothing in terms of being 'up to date.'

Given what you shoot, you should be on the lookout for a G series. I don't know if you're a solid ball striker and lack concentration and the finer skills to shoot in the 70s. Or, maybe you don't practice.

I don't think you should be playing anything but a G series, considering you like Ping, if you shoot 81-93, unless you're a member at Shinnecock.
