Bandon Dunes Packages

Bandon doesn't seem to advertise their packages, so they're not well-known. I'm planning my second trip in March (having done last March). In speaking with lowndes in a few others threads, he went last year in April. He and I were chatting about the savings to be gained by packages. I remarked that the package didn't save anything; he said he saved quite a bit.

With my second trip a couple of months away, I called and inquired about packages for my timeframe and also asked about package pricing for other times. Essentially, packages make sense in some months, and don't in others. Below is some cost data to demonstrate. This was confirmed by the reservations person (who could not answer as to why package pricing makes sense in some months and not in others).

Bottom line - if you're planning a 3 or 4 night trip to Bandon, you should call and inquire about package pricing. You might (or might not) save money.

So here's the deal - the 3-night package includes the following:

3 nights lodging

3 rounds

3 breakfasts

2 dinners (app, maincourse, dessert - no cocktails)

For March, the package price is $855. 3 nights lodging (@ $120), 3 rounds of golf (@ $125) and 3 breakfasts (@ $15) come to $780 - which essentially means by buying the package you're prepaying for two dinners (without alcohol) for $75. That strikes me as probably about a wash.

For April, the numbers are much more supportive of a package. Price is $935. 3 nights lodging (@ $165), 3 rounds (@ $170) and 3 breakfasts (@ $15) are $1050, and you get two dinners to boot. That's a nice deal.

In fact, it makes the price bump from March to April less than the advertised rates - and makes me wonder if I might push subsquent trips to April instead of March to get the (hopefully) incrementally better weather.

Sorry for the threadjack but I am considering going in feb 7-9 by myself as I'll be in the area. What are the chances of getting on as a single? Weather?
[/quote]

You shouldn't have any problem. Call the resort (now) and they'll let you know what tee times are available on which courses. They do single tee times for resort guests.

Weather: take everything. If you're there long enough, you'll likely use it all. There is usually a span of really good weather in February in Oregon, called the February Tease, maybe a week or so where the temps get near 60 and the skies are clear. Everyone thinks "ah, winter is done!"

Then it snows.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

I heard back about packages. Really, I don't think it is a good deal for my situation.

They quoted me $800 for the 4-day package. It includes 4 nights lodging, 4 rounds, 4 breakfasts and 3 dinners. However, it doesn't include replay rounds.

Without a package, four nights and four rounds is $600 at this time. Maybe it is just me, but I don't value 4 breakfasts and 3 dinners at $200. That would be $40 per dinner and $20 per breakfast. I think I can do better on my own.

I wish the package deal made more sense for me.

When we went in December, the meal packages made sense only if we ordered from the high end of the menu (>$35/entrée). We definitely could have eaten well for less (burgers, meat loaf, etc...). Also, the food packages only have one or two approved appetizers (simple salad/soup). Don't think we got desserts included..... The breakfast buffet was excellent as far as breakfast buffets go, so no hesitation there. But again, you need to eat a full breakfast (not just a toast/bagel and coffee) for it to be worth it.

Remember the old saying....April showers bring May flowers!

Check your weather info about rainfall for those two months I suggest and use that to help weigh out the cost factor.

I got super lucky in the first week of Dec one year weather wise.

They are also running two man events in May and the end of June....like $1400 like those packages but with a tournament involved. I imagine tee prizes and of course payouts. If your car license plate reads SBagger this might be the way to go.

While I was working in my 1 day a week gig over at Interbay a client told me of a Super Bowl tourney that occurs every year the week before the big game. Apparently it started years ago w/ 1 Pro and a couple of friends (around 12 players) it has now grown to over a couple hundred participants and grows each year. He told me due to the size of the tourney the pkg deal for 5 days w/ golf, food, and a big Super Bowl party was something ridicoulus around $600.

That sounds like a deal to me. I guess like all resorts the more revenue you can bring the bigger the discount they are willing to provide.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a group of 8 going for three nights, and we are debating the package in March. However, we have the Lily Pond booked which is $5 less per night. 3 nights lodging (@ $115), 3 rounds of golf (@ $125) and 3 breakfasts (@ $15) come to $765 - which makes it two dinners for $90! It seems I should ask for the next room up to the Chrome Lake Double and it would be a better deal. I know I'm splitting hairs at this point, but it just seems weird to offer a package that isn't really a great deal. I was at Bandon last April on a two night package (near the same time as lowndes). I didn't do the math then because someone else booked and organized the trip. But this year I'm putting the trip together and I want to make it as cost effective as possible. I'm leaning towards no package unless we can book Chrome Lake.

I think maybe the thought process is that the greens fees and lodging are already so discounted in March that there's no real reason to offer an additional option. The truth is, it's such a bargain at this time of year that I have no reason to complain. However, as I said, it will cause me to do some price-comparisons next year for March versus April, because the package deal means that the price bump is less than what might be gleaned from looking only at the rack rates.

Enjoy your trip!

Chris_NH...Since you went last March, how was the weather? I went the second week of April 2013, and we only had rain the day we arrived. We weren't scheduled to play a round, but went out on BD for 14 or so holes. The remaining two days were great, and we had early chilly temps but it warmed to close to 65 with sun. I don't remember the wind being much of a factor. We had no problem getting in 36 and even played another 9 holes each day.

We were there the very end of March (Easter weekend, unbeknownst to us when we booked the trip!). The best way I can put it is: we were more concerned about sunburn than we were about rain. We had some drizzles the last day on Old Mac, but even one of the people working at the lodge greeted us with "I don't know where you think you are, but you are NOT in coastal Oregon right now" (in reference to the weather). We got crazy lucky and, to manage expectations, I'm figuring this year will be payback.

But, as a buddy of mine who is going is fond of saying, it never rains in the pub! And we're all ready for it if it does rain.
