Back to familiarity , anyone done recently?

After falling for the look of the Titleist 712 cb/mb combo I put in bag in June, there were just certain shots/lies that I was not as comfortable with as my previous set. I have played multiple rounds and shot some good scores with the 712 set, just keep thinking back to Jackie Burke's take on clubs, meaning with anything significant on the line, rather look down on a friend- therefore, 962b set back in the bag. Anyone else gone back to a trusted set lately?

Never left my trusted set :) it's hard for me to replace memories of shots I've hit with certain clubs. As long as they keep performing, they stay in the bag until they wear out. Shafts might change, grips might change and be updated...but the heads remain the same "old friends".
First significant attempt to make a change other than an odd round here or there, had 962b heads in bag since November of 1998, don't see changing again anytime in future since have two sets and durable stainless.

Yeah I try different irons more than I should and always end up back to the stuff in my sig. When Im in the rough or have to cut something around a tree or move the ball right to left it just aint happening with foreign irons. Most sets I take out see the front 9 and then go to the parking lot and my old reliables play the back 9. I can honestly say Im comfortable hitting 4 iron thru wedge from whatever f-d up places I put myself in with my old gear, and when Im on Im on. When Im not..well its not the clubs fault.

Yes, I recently went back to my Nike Pro Combos. I got the AP2 714s, but never felt as comfortable with them. I realized after a few weeks that I should not have gotten the new irons, I played my best golf with my Nikes, and I always go back to them.

Great question...I just bought 1988 Apex Redlines to replace X-22 tours. Clubs just have not changed since (I believe) that era, with the exception of stronger lofts and increased club lengths which mask short shots. I get a kick out of (see my posts under the "blades vs. cavity back" topic) guys who continually strive to "purchase" a lower-scoring round vs. improving their swing, embarking on endless searches for "forgiving" clubs. Guys at the club think I'm nuts because they play the latest and greatest "long hitting shovel irons" vs. my "too hard to hit" Hogan's, yet, they still want to hit my clubs. When they do, my Hogan's are happy to provide feedback to let them know just how lousy their swing is which is not great for the ego!
there are more here that think they can "buy better score" than have to work for it...

look at all the threads...there all on blah vs blah or woods vs woods.....when they list 3 different irons in same category do you really think it matters which one...lol

after all said and done, its the swing that matters...no 2 ways around it....a new club is not going to change your swing

Classic WRX thread....along the lines of, anyone still playing (insert club that's less than a year old). This time it's, anyone still playing a club that works really well for you?

IMO, I think playing "harder to hit" clubs is more fun and challenging. I may sound like a complete nut, but I purchased a set (1-E) Hogan Redlines a month ago. That has been the best prescription to get my swing back. I literally stand on the grass range and hit the one iron over and over, 2 feet, 5 feet off the ground, and every once and a while a not bad hit. After that the 2 iron looks like a 7 iron! These clubs have no problem telling me just what a "moron" I've been, and scold me for thinking I can actually play golf well...playing with these clubs is kind of like playing with a tour player watching your every move...LOL!

I'm ok at a 12 Hcp...I play tees rated at 72/132 rated tees most of the time, but the greens are stupid fast with lots of undulations. 5 or so strokes of my Hcp are putting. However, aside from putting issues, I was HIGHLY enlightened just how much my swing got ruined with "easier to hit" clubs. My all-time favorite irons have been blades and shot the lowest rounds with them....MP's, Wilson FG's, etc, but I, like everyone else, got caught up in the hype of marketing some years ago. Now I'm searching for persimmon woods for practice. My mantra is "don't play unless you mean it"...I can't stand seeing myself on video with dumbass moves. Just drives me insane.
