PXi Question - Swingweight vs. Total Weight

I am going to get a set of MP4's/MP64's built with PXi 6.0 shafts. I have been using DG-S300 for years but wanted something a bit lighter, so I demoed the PXi, then had a MP-67 built with one to compare to my existing MP-67/S300 combo, with good results.

 

The only difference between the 2 clubs is the shaft, the PXi being lighter and also 1/4" shorter. I played around with some lead tape to find the right feel, so am ready to go, but for one thing:

 

The swingweight of the 67 with the S300 is D2; the PXi is C7 (C5 before the lead tape, of which I added ~18g), but, according to my inaccurate but consistent kitchen scale, the total weight is the same, which is probably why I liked it.

 

When building the new set, how do I replicate the test club? Can the new clubs be built with 15-20g additional weight, and does this negate the benefit of moving to a lighter shaft? Any considerations with the flex?

 

Any answers and suggestions appreciated, as the new set won't be cheap so I'd rather not get it wrong!

You added 18 gm of lead tape and only got a SW increase of 2 pts (C5 to C7)? That doesn't seem right, where did you put the tape on the club? Did you measure the weight of the head before you installed in?

Without clarification it's hard to say but chances are, if you have to add that much weight to get the feel you want, then those shafts are too light for you.

18g of lead tape would have been approx a 9 point addition in swing weight. Unfortunately with inaccurate data, a proper answer cannot be provided.

Yes, inaccurate data. You need proper tools to build clubs. Swingweight scale, gram scale, club length ruler. Anything short of this is just monkey business.

The tape went on the back of the clubhead. I was surprised when I had the SW checked (verified at C5 when build by local guy, checked on same machine with 4.5" of lead tape on) - I was expecting D4-D5.

I don't have the capacity to weigh the clubheads, but under normal circumstances, changing a ~128g shaft for a ~112g shaft would typically yield what result? How do the calculations change for a counterbalanced shaft like KBS or PXi?

I've played my AP2's with both DG shafts and PX and PXi. Was able to achieve my usual D4-ish with each shaft using tip weights.

My understanding is that Miz uses differently weighted sets of heads, one heavier, one lighter, depending on the length and swingweight needs.
I'd say order them at your desired specs and if they can't hit them as you want them, they should be able to tell you. Or, just call them.

Thanks. The question is though, do I order at a C7 sw or at the same total weight as an S300 install at D2?

I think your measurements are off. Order at your desired length and your desired swingweight. They'll be great.

If you have any interest at all even in tinkering with club building, then a scale is a must. You can get a very inexpensive postal type scale for very little.

There is no typical results. What will happen will completely depend on you and you're swing and how well each shaft fits you. Some might see a noticeable difference of some sort (could be anything, speed, distance, direction, dispersion - no valid generalizations) or you might see no difference at all. Only way to know is to actually try the two and compare how the results change (if at all).

When I ordered my Fourteen TC930 I had them reshaft from S300 to PXi 6.0 built to D2 -1/4". Coming from S300 the 7-iron was 443g total weight @ D4 while in the PXi 6.0 it was 430g after adding 5g tip weight to bring it to D2 (was C9/D0 without tip weight). Hope this helps!
