Who uses "modern classic" set-up?

After getting in some practice @ a local range, struck up a conversation with two very personable, older Japanese gentlemen. After "talking story" with them a few, they asked where I played my golf locally and if would like to meet up with them sometime for a casual round. Almost as an aside, one of the gentlemen said " by the way, with that modern classic set, you can forget any of guys in our regular group letting you in on the friendly bets, gives you away as a good player." So sort of along the spirit of the judging players by their bag and intimidating bag threads, got me curious as to who here plays what they would define as a "modern classic" set and what would the forum define as the typical set of this type?

What is your setup? That could give us some insight into what a modern classic setup looks like... does that mean players clubs from a few years ago?

Edit: I'm an idiot and for some reason my computer didn't show his sig... I would call that a modern classic setup. Players clubs all around. Nothing too new and flashy. Everything is well respected for its age.

Was asking for constructive input and discussion, not sarcasm. My signature contains clubs currently in bag, not the latest and greatest but many do seem to be still well regarded/playable/relevant after an appreciable period of time, so I was presuming that's what comment by gentleman meant.

OK, you're at the range.
These guys see you, +2.8, hit golf balls.
They are impressed and invite you to a casual round.
I saw your sig.
One of them mentions something about not including you in their "friendly wagers".
And, that would be b/c of your "modern classic" set-up. (Not b/c you obviously got game)

My question: "Modern classic" compared to what? What did they have in their bag?

Bottom line: Nice passive brag

I'm lost, I'm using the mobile version so I can't see sigs. Sounds like a good topic if I could see what a modern classic bag is.
I think I could fit in as I have clubs from all era's, when I'm able to see the sig I will join in....

Players clubs + good swing = +2.8 hcp and no betting.
Seems like a wise, educated statement by the older gentleman......

The second guy looked like he swiped a bag from Taylor Made @ Sony Open, struggled a bit with longer clubs, but peppered 100 yard target green with wedge. If both had any semblance of a decent short game, I would guess both were mid to low single digit players. I can see how could have come across as passive brag, no worries not easily offended. :)

I guess I don't know clubs well enough, but when I see a set of DCIs or TZoids I think, ooh I remember them from when I started playing. But I don't think of whether they are classics and I am pretty sure none of the guys playing them were worried about the cachet value.
Whether it's old Mizzys or Hogans, I have not witnessed any correlation between the clubs and the scores the players shot.

Your swing and ball flight marked you out long before they saw your clubs ;)

What is a "modern classic set up"?
IMO, R7, Newport 2, qualify as recent classics and Vokeys/AP2 , could be considered same in few years based on how highly they are regarded.

Definitely not meant to be offensive. I'm still LOL!

I'm a "lowly" high single hdcp (comp to you).........I envy you. (Just for the record) Jealousy is not part of my genes and my envy of others is without any malice.

At the driving range, although I am curious, I don't need to see what's in his bag to positively know that someone is a "player" by WRX standards.

IMHO, it is foolish to think that a non-WRXer, anywhere in the world, doesn't know the difference. WITB has nothing to do with it.

To me what gives away the "modern classic" in this scenario is the fact that your irons and driver are both clearly players clubs, and you have shafts in them that didn't come out till well after production ended on those heads. Not everyone would catch on to that, but a WRX'er would. I mean, who puts a 2011 shaft in a 2008 driver head? Or 2012 shafts in 2006 irons? Some one who knows what they are doing and doesn't need to please a sponsor. Don't fix what isn't broken... unless you can actually make it better. I'd judge someone with that bag.

Most single digit guys pitch lawn darts from 150 and in to small greens.....target golf. They'd hit 8 out of 10. I wish I could be that good one day. I'm decent but not a single digit capper. I don't list my hdcp because it hasn't been established since last year when I took some time off. I was confused on what you meant by classic bag. If it was older clubs then many play with old clubs both high and low cappers.

Maybe single digit + handicaps but probably not even then. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some days you hardly hit a green but still shoot low scores.

You guys have got to be high handicappers because you are very mistaken about a single digit's GIR abililities. 8/10 or 10/10 GIR is +hc or scratch. My buddies and I are 6/7/8 hc's, and we don't hit anywhere near that high % or GIR from 150.
However, our short games are crisp, and we are good putters.

This is simply wrong. The PGA player that lead the tour in approach proximity from 125-150 yards was 18'5", and the tour player with the best GIR % from 125-150 was 80%.

Getting back on topic, I think to have a "modern-classic" bag, you have to have the game to back it up. When a higher handicap player is using older 'modern-classic' clubs, the perception changes from to 'he's a hacker with old clubs'.

I would say your bag is definitely a modern-classic bag lol.

The concept of "Modern Classic" is interesting. If nothing else, I think putting together a modern classic bag is a good way to maximize performance without paying the premium for the newest stuff. Only a few clubs released each year are going to have "staying power," and the best clubs from a few years ago are going to be better than the average clubs released this year. Its just statistics.

Anyway, It has always been my strategy to search the used bins for clubs (and shafts) that were well-reviewed on GolfWRX and try them out, As a result, I think my bag qualifies as "Modern Classic." Although I could just be a hacker with old clubs. Depends on who I am playing against.

Hmm. I know the stats include players going after tucked pins and from bad lies, but wouldn't you expect a Tour player to always hit the green with a 9 iron from the middle of the fairway?
