Early September Recommendations - PDX to Salem

We are starting to plan a PNW trip that starts at Chambers and ends at Bandon. We'd like to break up the drive from Seattle with a stop somewhere between PDX and Salem. We know nothing about the area. All we're looking for is a decent room, a great restaurant and/or bar, and an awesome round of golf. We are members at a private club so please mention any privates that might be "gettable".

Really, there aren't any clubs in PDX or Salem that are on complete lockdown. They might not be easily accessible in the sense that you can just show up and play like at many reciprocals, but a call from your pro could probably get you on (it may have to be a PM round on a couple of them).

You can take your pick here in the Portland area...

You could toss The Reserve South in there too, which is fun during the summer.


Salem and south is much slimmer pickings...

I guess it depends on what you want to (or can) play. They are all good (I personally hate Oregon GC--it seems like a 50/50 split for people to love or hate) and better than nearly every other public option in town. Most people get the whole, "Play Eugene CC on the way down to Bandon" spiel and while the course is great, I think it might be a touch overrated. I guess if you want to knock another Golf Digest Top 100 course off your list, this might be it. I know the unaccompanied guest fee is rather spendy (north of $200).

I didn't see in your post, but what month are you planning to do your trip? That will be a large determining factor in where you should play.

I would play Langdon Farms(right off I-5 just South of the Wilsonville exit). The Holiday Inn in Wilsonville is alright. It has a nice bar and some nice bars nearby in Wilsonville,OR. The Golf course is nice and it drains water well. Both the Course and the Hotel can be seen from the Interstate so you will minimalize your travel.

Duh. Totally missed it, my bad.

You should catch pretty nice weather here in PDX, might be a bit windy in Bandon.

How many guys do you have going?

My first choice would be Portland Golf Club and second would be the private course at Pumpkin Ridge.

There are tons of options for hotels but you might as well stay in downtown Portland and go to one of the MANY brew pubs here. It will only add 15 minutes to your drive the next day. This city is know for the local breweries and brew pubs.

I would also recommend stopping and playing Sand Pines on the way to Bandon. Very fun course, breaks up the drive and gets you ready or in a links state of mind. Also it is very reasonably priced.
