Are there lighter clubheads available than the Ping s55 ?

Currently I play Ping S56 irons with an E7 swing weight and they are heavy overall. This is because of the +2" shaft length.

Ping can change weights in the s55 and s56, I don't know by how much but I assume they put the lightest weights in my heads since the sw is E7 already.

So either I take the weights out all together, if this is possible or I need to look elsewhere...

There is a topic on WRX saying Mizuno makes some heads in different weights but no numbers or comparisons to other brands.

Mizuno's light weight heads should come out around E1 with a dynamic gold shaft and standard 52gr grip. Heavier grip like a mid or oversize would reduce the swing weight further as could your shaft choice. KBS or a some lighter weight shaft could knock a point or two off. I would expect that Ping could accomplish the same if specified at the time of order.

Not sure if this will appeal to you or not, but you could bore some holes in the muscleback of a set of blades and remove weight this way

You could get them to any swingweight this way

Mizuno ST190G atmos 6s
Mizuno MP18 2fh / PX 6.0
Mizuno MP18 3-Pw/ PX 6.0
Mizuno S18 5310+5812/PX 6.0
Ping TR Anser 1966/ 34”

Ball - pro v1x
Grips - Crossline cord

Lofts 18 , 21.5, 25, 29, 33, 37, 41, 45, 49, 53, 58

Called Ping yesterday, with a +2" X100 or Project X 6.5 they can't get the swing weight down into the D. (Without adding weight on the grip end.)
This might be right since my s56 set is E7

Still it's hard to believe since Taylor Made can get it to D5 by making the head a bit lighter. Why can't a brand keen on their fitting options like Ping can't get it within 12!!!!!!!!! swing weights of TM... This puzzles me.

I would love to stick with Ping so this might be the only solution, do you know where it's best to drill those holes without messing up the balance of the head?

On the phone Ping says they can't do it.. So it's either drilling holes, Mizuno does a better job but TM seems to be able to get it done without adding weight. Still hope the PIng guy on the phone forgot about some options;) I will try to order D5 first and see how they reply before looking for other solutions.

Not sure how you would do it with pings

you could bor ethe hosel out as deep as possible and cut part of it off to save some weight

I am trending towards a change in religion. Will be painful to stop playing Ping but for taller players with x-stiff shafts it seems they have no serious options. Looking at the lighter mizuno heads and TM seems to be more flexible.

What you could do is get a set of clubs 3-pw and play the set weak lofted

a 3 iron head is 10 grams or more lighter than a 4 iron, so you could play a set like that, so your 3-pw would actually be a 2-9 iron set of head plus wedges. this could work well if your more of a digger also

just another option

At Taylormade they are very helpful, I explained the situation and one of their equipment guys is looking into it and will call me back about his findings. Really nice twist, most brands don't really seems to care about the small markets;) As soon I have found something that works decent I will post my findings for other tall players.

i know its gonna add to the cost but maybe one of the ping wrx grind options would remove enough weight. not sure how many manufactures make 2 different head weights. i once ordered a set of cg7 tour's with x100 and +1" and those were E1

G25 10.5 kiyoshi purple 75
G25 3w kiyoshi purple 85
G25 5w kiyoshi purple 85

They can't change the law of physics, a heavy shaft plus 2" over length. To be able to build this club at a D swing weight would mean, the starting head weight for all their s55 heads would need lower starting point and having to increase the port weight for all standard spec clubs.

They won't design the iron heads at a base weight to be able to build a club 2 inches over length with the heaviest shaft in golf. A golfer with a request for 2 inches under built with the ultra lightweight shaft will run into the same issue. They would need a much heavier head.

This is true...
The weight difference between a 9 and a 5 iron head compensates for about 2" difference in shaft length. That probably is quite a lot to remove from a head designed that much heavier.

I did figure the shaft weight would not make much difference since they are only a few grams apart, and lighter shafts often are designed with relatively more weight in the tip. I might be totally wrong here;)

PING can make 2-3 swing weight points lighter with custom tuning port. If you didn't give PING specific swing weight when you order, they will not change anything for swing weight. I think PING did not changed your S56's head weight.

I ordered G20 (r flex, standard length) with lightest swing weight they can make. They made with with C7 (PW and GW were slightly less than C9) and iron head were about 6-7 grams lighter.

For counter balancing, try Tour Lock Pro (http://www.tourlockp...m/products.html). It will change 1 swing weight point by 4-5 gram. 20g weight will make 4-5 SW points lighter and 30g will change 5-6 SW points. Try it with your S56 first. If you like it, you can try it with S55.

If you combine them all, you can make swing weight 7-9 points lighter.
On the phone Ping was less positive, I saw the thungsten weight in my club has a number 2 on it so maybe there is a 1 and even a 0. Without the weight in it, the club doesn't perform so that seems to be to much.

I've learned a lot lately on WRX and I will get a bit closer, still the times I've ordered sets I received sledge hammers that where no where near the shorter demos I got fitted with. So it's still a bit of a gamble. The only thing I am not sure about yet is how much a lighter shaft will help.
