Question for Ping guys

klbcec

Recommended Posts

Got fitted by a Ping rep for S55's two weeks ago. They came in last week, and I played my first round with them today - although I hit them on the range twice last weekend.

The swingweight was ordered as D2, but the club head feels too light, especially in the 7 - W. I cannot feel the club head at all.

Will Ping change the swingweight for me? Can the swingweight be adjusted other than lead tape?

Thanks in advance.

Have you verified the swingweight to this point?

The CTP insert in back is precisely for tuning swingweight. It can be changed.
[/quote]No, that is on my list for tomorrow. That is great news about the insert. Will l need to send them back to Ping?

I believe they're epoxied in there and they'll have to go back to Ping.
My S-55's I ordered at D4 PW and D3 9 to 3 and they are great.

check the SW first. Ping will get it to D2 first by lengthening the club, not by adding weight to the head. This is the reason many people don't like Ping irons cuz they feel really light in the head. You must specifically ask them to not lengthen the club, to only add a heavier weight in the CTP to get the head to feel heavier and get the SW to D2.

If no specific swing weight is requested, Ping's company policy is to produce a set at their standard swing weight, which is D0, with the wedges being D2.
If a customer requstes a specific swing weight, for example, D3, Ping will increase head weights to make the set D3 (and the wedges D5).
Unless a customer specifically requests longer length than the company's standard (37.75" 5 iron), Ping will not increase the length of the shafts.
In other words, Ping only uses longer length shafts if that was what is ordered, Ping will not use longer length shafts "just to achieve swing weight".

The ctp inserts generally range from 2g to 28g to help achieve certain desired swing weights.
Swing weight is something historically ignored by reps/fitters as they are tought that as long as the trajectory/spin rates are correct, swing weight should matter.

Must be a heavy smog in SoCal today. Likely the most erroneous statement I've seen in a while.

Back to the OP, you might be able to get the SW increased at no charge but be prepared to pay a hefty price per club to change the SW if they tell you that they were made to spec as ordered.

Had same issue before with i15s. My fitter wrote the wrong sw so they were D0, wanted at least D2, D3 if they could. Called Ping, told them they were too light and they tried as best they could to get them to D3. No lengthening required. They ended up around D2 for all of mine, std length. Just call them, tell them the truth and they will generally take care of you for free or the cost of shipping.

This is probably a dumb question, but does Ping also sw the i25 using the ctp inserts?

Also, has anyone double checked the sw of their irons after receiving them from Ping? Just curious about how accurate and consistent Ping is on getting the right sw.

Just curious where you got this information because it is very inaccurate. Ping will not change the length unless specified by the customer. I've had clubs at standard length ordered at D5 swing weight.

Not dumb at all. Pretty much every Ping iron going back the i3's they've had the inserts to be able to change the swingweight. The i25's have a newer CTP version in them like the S-55 irons.

I always throw my sets on my SW scale as soon as I take them out of the box, and Ping is usually within a point of the requested SW. They'd have to weight sort all their grips to get them absolutely spot on. They do a nice job and are well within tolerences when I check. Usually their PW weighs in a little heavy.

A number of people here have reported that Ping charges a pretty penny to adjust swingweight, assuming the problem was not their fault of course. Those weight port parts are apparently not cheap. If the clubs check out okay as far as the spec goes but still feel too light, I'd go the lead powder and cork swingweight method to adjust swingweight and save the coin.

D2 is plenty heavy enough swing weight for an iron set. Play the set for at least a few months time, i expect you will come to love them.
As for "not feeling the club head", that is typically grip-related rather than the club itself. Try checking your grip technique, especially holding the club in only the last two fingers of the left hand.

Everyone is different in size for example. A D2 PW is too light to me. I used a fairly heavy bat in baseball too. Weight for me helps greatly with my takeaway tempo in keeping me a little slower on the way back and swing positions. I can "feel" where it's at, and that doesn't have anything to do with my gripping of the club.
Also, added weight affects the shaft flex. Some people may very much enjoy the added "load" placed on the shaft the added weight creates. If you're between flexes, for example, a little more weight to the head can help you load them a little more and go with the stiffer flex.
As I understand swingweight, it came into focus especially with the advent of taper tip iron shafts and making the "load" on the shaft more uniform across the set by paying attention to swingweight club to club.

It's not the cheapest thing to have Ping do the work but if you ordered them stock at d0, there is a good chance they will be a little off. I just got my i20s back and they actually had to lighten one of the weights to go to d3 from d0. They also couldn't get my 7 or 9 iron to d3 with the midsize grips I had.
