I've been eyeing the Cobra King utility from all the excellent reviews. Sounds like I need to give the u45 or u65 a look.

Thanks to this thread, I picked up a U65 2 iron, I’m glad I did. It definitely outperformed my MMC 2 iron.

You see a distance increase or just better launch and forgiveness?

I want a u45 2 iron or u65 to compare, but I purchased a g400 4 iron power spec loft at 19* and it is a slingshot. I play i200s in power spec lofts 3-pw but dropped 3/4/5 and added g400 4 iron power spec and g400 5 iron to replace them. I now have 19*, 23.5*, then i200 6 iron power spec at 28*. Love the set up and more forgiveness in long irons.

I've been killing my King Utility, but now I feel like the U65/45 may need a shot based on the reviews.

Distance was similar, thought the MMC was a 16.5* and the U65 is an 18*. i liked the launch U65, it felt like it naturally launched mid to high, but i was able to hit lower shots. The Fli-hi felt like everything was a low bullet. it might have to do with the shafts, the MMC had the CTaper and my U65 has the stock MIyazaki.

I have gamed

Callaway Apex UT

Srixon u45

Taylormade udi

Callaway x forged ut

All in 18 degree all with the same shaft.

I can honestly say that the Callaway for me were the best of the bunch.

My apex ut finally have in and I cracked the face so Callaway replaced it with the x forged.

I'm really impressed with it softer felling/sounding than the apex but still just as explosive.

Srixon felt the softest but couldnt get away with the bulky look and I just just didn't enjoy the url..

Hope this helps

Haha I've been singing its praises as well. Great looks in every way, headshape, lines, sole width. Performance is elite.

To answer the OP.....U65 without a doubt of everything I've tried. It's in my bag and plenty of tour players. Heaps of people who have told me it's too long and the hottest DI they've used.

What about the best current driving iron in terms of easy to hit, shape, flight etc without extreme distance? I'm getting fit in about a months time and would like to try a few, ideally I just want something around 23* to replace the 4 iron, worried the U65 would create gapping issues either side of say a 26* 5 iron and my 19* 5w.

X Forged ut or Titleist t mb would be best served for this

Honestly I didn't this k anything could beat my Apex UT. The plan was to they the x forged then more than likely sell it and get another apex..

That thing isn't going anywhere...

I play my 18* U65 between the 3w and 4i typically, unless I need the hybrid as well. I was worried about gapping and if I could get elevation if I needed it. Because the face launches so well, I could've bent it stronger or weaker until I got my carry number. Going to a fitter will save you a lot of guessing and hassle. I was disappointed in testing the T MB, would've much preferred the 718 CB for less $$. The Callaway was my preferred option going into the fitting as I really liked the look and feel of my X-Prototypes.

  • 2 months later...

I've tried and played the Apex UT (still have in the overflow pile), Bridgestone Tour B X-UT (not sure about it yet), TM UDI (see sig), TM Tour Burner Proto (small head, hot face), and the Mizuno fli-hi (gone). For me, a lot of what makes a DI work is the shaft but the OG UDI is a beast. Totally beat the Apex UT and in 4i loft, outperforms the B'stone at 20° - it's forgiving, long, easy to hit low/high/right/left on command, and feels awesome most of all. Like I said, the shaft makes a difference and I've yet to try each with the same shafts so it's not the end of the test pile. I do have a 790 UDI and 3i coming to give a go and see how it compares.

I've got the U65's in a 2 and 3 iron and they've got pop. But I think the Ping G crossover was maybe even hotter for well struck center hits, but uncharacteristically for Ping, it was really lousy for off-center hits.

How do you find the distance gap between the 2 and 3 iron? I have been thinking about replacing my 2 hybrid with a U65 2. I noticed there is only a 2* gap between the 2 and 3 U65 and I am not sure I will get at least a 10 yard gap between the two clubs.

Turns out both of mine were 19.5º loft. The 2 iron has a steel shaft and the 3 iron graphite (both 100g+ X-flex, see sig). The 3 appeared like it launched about a degree higher so I at first attributed that to the stated loft difference, but I was wrong I now know. As is, the 2 iron is about 10 yards longer, but that is sort of roll dependent because it does launch low. If my 2 iron launched lower (like a true 18º loft), it would be even more roll dependent.

I am playing the zu45 with the stock nippon and sometimes ut ballons into the wind. What shafts do you have in your driving iron?

I don't have one. My 4 is a JPX I don't have confidence in. It's the only hole in my bag RN at least as far as club heads. I hit the 718 with the Pxi and I liked it but it only spun 3600 for me and looked narrower on the sole than I'd want ideally.

I had the 120x in my u45 20 but went so high and spun a ton. Just put a tensei white 100x in and so far so good

Well, this thread prompted me to get a U65 off the Bay in my quest for the true ultimate DI. I swing driver 103-107 and so I went with the X-stiff Miyazaki, but I'm a little concerned it will be loose. But, if the head is as good as everyone says, I'll be able to tell (I hope) and swap to another shaft if needed.

I've bagged the 712U, 716 T-Mb, 718-TMB, Tour Preferred UDI (1 and 3), P790 UDI 2 iron and so I have a pretty decent sample size to compare it with

It will feel light and loose for sure.
