P790 UDI

What an absolute horror of a club. Took one to the range today, bought 60 balls to hit.

Knew after 3 shots that this wasn’t the club for me. I hit about 8 shots straight in total, none further than a typical 6 Iron, the rest were just abysmal. I could bend a shot with this club around a 90* angle.

33 shots later, I left, so someone has 27 balls to enjoy. Note to self, take at least two clubs to the range.

Just for reference as to my playing level I’ve hit 6 rounds in the 70s in the last month. My ball striking with my irons is typically a strong point. ?

... I have the 790 19* 3 iron with an Even Flow Blue hybrid shaft and when swinging well it was just an awesome club off the tee. But on my bad back days it stayed a home because it takes good contact to perform. That said, I prefer the original UDi TP 2 iron which I find more forgiving. Ymmv ...

It may be one of the best driving irons to come out in recent years. When struck well, I saw piercing shots that carried around 220. May not be the club for your swing, but determining that it is a horror of a club because you couldn't find the middle of the face doesn't make much sense.

Not an easy club to hit, definitely not a club for those who rely on any kind of forgiveness in a club with 17 degrees of loft. It's probably the best driving iron I've hit, just didn't fit my needs as it is a little too low spinning and goes too far.

Im not sure it has a middle of the face. Certainly never hit shots like today with other utility clubs I’ve owned like the G and G400 #3 Crossover or the Cobra King.

Just remember it is a “driving iron” and takes a good swing to hit it well off the deck. I love mine since it gives me a great 220/225 carry with 15+ yards of roll (when it isn’t soaked from Florida rain). For me the shaft plays a huge part in building one that worked for me.

It is about the biggest revolving door type club you see get listed on eBay/BST and get snagged up. Then, many more get listed to take its place.

Last weekend I used it 5 or 6 times and hit all but one fairway with it. I also missed plenty of greens all day en route to a nice 81.

Interesting, to me the thing is super forgiving, mine is at 18* and play my normal iron shaft.

On a normal round on my home course its my most used club in a round. I use it off the deck if needed but mostly from the tee.

I would certainly say don't give up after one session, also find the right shaft and length!

I’ve given up on it, and there’ll be no going back. Either I had my worst day ever hitting a golf ball or this thing really doesn’t suit me. In all my time in golf I’ve never had trouble hitting a club like this one. I’m not a massive hitter anyway, 6I goes about 170 carry, but if I compare success rate to that 6 Iron I’d say for every 50 shots I hit with it, 45 are good, 4 could be better and maybe 1 is poor. My success rate with the UDI, on today’s evidence was about 25% and even those were in the could be better group. I’ll stick to my 5 Wood, hybrids and 4I I think. I hit all of those decently.

Nothing wrong with the P790 UDI. Just must not be a good fit for your swing. Honestly, I find it to be surprisingly forgiving for what it is.

Some people are thrown off by lighter shafts, and the HZRDUS black in the UDI is 85g. That could be part of it. You might do better with a steel shaft that had a weight closer to what your irons probably have.

My irons are graphite, round about C9 for my 8 Iron. All my shafts are graphite, some reg, some stiff.

I'm not sure you had the firepower to be able to hit this club. 6 iron 170 is (IMO) on the wrong side of the "Should I bag a driving iron?" question.

For those that do have the swing speed, the p790 is an outstanding club. Easy to elevate, and for me anyway (GC Quad verified) produced the best ball speeds of the driving irons.

Forgiveness on the other hand was probably the worst (with the u85/65/45 being the most forgiving). The P790 udi was really just a P790 2 iron. Same sole width, blade length, and offset of the regular iron set.

I also found the graphite hzrdus black stock shaft in it to be significantly lower launching than other shafts I tried in it.

This club is definitely not for everyone. At risk of sounding dickish, you need to be a very good ball striker with high clubhead speed for this club to really perform. It’s not a forgiving head and it produces very little spin. The latter point may be why you were seeing shots drop out of the sky. For me I find it much more forgiving than most hybrids in that the lack of spin eliminates my tendency to over hook a hybrid.

Just got mine in today, super excited to swing it - but I also love 2 irons/driving irons and have played them for years. My guess also is a lack of speed and spin as to why it is not working well...maybe a different shaft that provides a little more kick?

Don't take this the wrong way but it's possible you just dont have the swingspeed for this club.

It's my favorite club in the bag. 260-265 off the tee and 250 off the deck.

Different strokes for different folks. I had one and hated it with the lightweight graphite but hit it much better with steel. Play what works. Plenty of clubs out there.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

I don't have the UDI but I carry the p790 3 iron and 4 iron (bent to 23) and they're my favorite clubs. I don't think I'd like them with graphite shafts, but my 3 with a KBS Tour FLT 130x shaft is a rocket launcher off of the tee. Off the deck requires a pretty darn good strike. I find the 4 to be really easy to hit either way.

I’m sticking with my G400 4I at 19* power spec, have barely hit a bad shot with it. A far cry from the P790 with which I managed more bad shots in 33 balls than I have in a year with the G400.

I have had two 790 udi’s, one with the stock hzrdus black shaft and one shafted to my irons which was KBS C-taper 120’s. The stock black shaft is crap for my swing so I sold it and found a C-Taper shafted UDI and that literally was one of the best udi’s I’ve ever had! It was an entirely new different club and since then I have played all steel in my UDI’s with much success and will not turn back. I was shocked how different the game was with different shafts.

Hilarious. The guy I sold this club to, who would’ve received it earlier this week has now listed for sale on the site I sold it to him from. He obviously can’t hit it either.

I have one with an AD-DI, and I agree it's not a super forgiving club. It's easy to work it in both directions, but I'm getting rid of it to add another wedge because there just isn't enough of a gap between that and my 3 wood to justify carrying it.

Agree with this. Although I found it far too easy to work in either direction without trying to.

I love my 790UDI. I hit my 6i around 175ish and only use the UDI off the tee. It is a beast for me. I get an easy 240 out of it including rollout. I had to add lead to the back of the head and a new shaft but it's perfect now. I like it better than my old trusty OG UDI now. Not many people I know liked the 790UDI stock with the HZRDUS but I know of a lot who like it with a different shaft.
