Beginner golfer concerned with direction of lessons
Pepperturbo replied to cbrown1170's topic in Instruction & Academy
Have a sitdown with your instructor and tell him/her how you're feeling, and listen to his response. Also, seeking advice other than from your teacher, is bound to confuse you even more. You need to be patient with the process, and don't second-guess the teacher. -
I always remind myself to set my azz on the front part of a bar stool with my knees over the back portion of the balls of my feet.

Had both plus GT2. To my surprise, GT3 was longer and sweeter.

I have the 91g stiff going in one of my other 2 irons.

Scheffler approaches : fat side pin high
Pepperturbo replied to Ross_Albatross's topic in Instruction & Academy
He plays a slightly different game than other pros, starting with clear thinking, self-control, and ball control. -
Check out Nippon NS Pro Modus GOST Hybrid, comes in 91g to 112 TX. All I will say is it feels very different.

Jack Nicklaus Trackman Number guesses
Pepperturbo replied to mryank's topic in Classic Golf And Golfers
Amazing. Those numbers are basically the same as mine. Because I don't use an LM, can't imagine his LM numbers. -
When I first took up golf, I measured my distances against others that had been playing a lot longer and were good. With the advent of strong lofts, it's laughable doing what "club number" and "distance" comparitive. I am 74 now, still playing with traditionally lofted irons while almost everyone else I play with uses stronger lofted irons. There are plenty of things that can affect us playing golf; distance difference should NOT mean squat to anyone's confidence. You're playing the course, not club distance game. Recently I was on a par 3, 155 yds. I hit 6i and a scratch younger buddy hit 9i over the pin. The other day; on par 4 this 5ish cap hit a 2 iron off the tee. My 45-year-old 3-cap colleague hit hybrid and hit the same distance as my ball. Then I hit a 4 iron short of the green; he hit a 5 wood 20 yards longer in the green-side bunker, and we both got up and down for par.

I used to have my PW, Gap & LW the same length of 9i, 36." For that reason, swing weights increased, which was fine. Today, my Gap & LW are the same length as PW, 35.75", again, with slightly different swing weights, which is fine. All I can imagine will happen from a 1/4" short is swing weight will subltely change. Whether you notice it remains to be seen.

This is a natural test. Love for golf is like love for a wife...over time there are tests. And any time an instructor wants to change your whole swing, that's your cue to walk the other way.

Driver Shaft Change Question
Pepperturbo replied to gvogel's topic in Avg Joe Swings Stiff and Below
Nothing wrong with that idea except if one shaft is different is some way - you need to be able to swing it though the round. As you know, you can't change shafts during the round. I am 74 and have a Diamana GT 58 S in the driver that I hit really well, even if pooped. But I also have my tried and true "Fujikura Fuel Tour Spec 60-s 65g" stout shaft which I played for years. I take it out now and again when I think I am playing a fast course; it's longer than GT. The thing is, if I am pooped, it's difficult to make it work well. -
Different Ball or Driver Shaft Recommendations
Pepperturbo replied to mitrik's topic in WRX Club Techs
Handi is 5ish; don't know SS of Rogue ST Max 9.5 with Diamana GT S, but hit it straight 250ish; 7i is 80+/-. I played DASH -ProV1x for several years, its a good all around ball. It is longer than most other balls and did everything else within reason. To get spin out of it, I just hit it harder. Then I tripped over the NEW ProV1, immediately it was my new ball. For me, it's as long as DASH, but it performs better around fast greens, and I like its lower trajectory. Years back I played ProV1x but they changed the ball to a spinner; thus off driver ball spins too much, its great off irons. -
Not really, 58 vs 68 - stiff. I am a downrange eyeball guy; don't use LMs. They were similar in distance, except I tended to hit the 58 further than the 68. I was surprised how stable the lighter-weight shafts are. Launch was relatively the same, and dispersion with each was minimal. I have several Ventus; they are fine shafts.

I have Ventus 5 & 6 series Red and Blue shafts and played TR Blue for 2+ years, until last year when I switched to GT I hit TR Blue lower and further than Red, but Red's bend profile fit me better and it was straighter. Red has a very stiff handle and a soft but stiff tip, while blue's handle is a bit soft for feel users, but the tip is ultra stiff. I can see why Red's stiff handle profile had you swing a tad slower. Choosing Red or Black profiles depends on SS.
-
I play the new ProV1; compression-wise it's softer than the ProV1x, but ProV1 spins less than the ProV1x. Years back I played ProV1x.
-
Best guess, soft tip depends on your tempo being consistent. If your swing tempo is at all off, your hands will be in the wrong position while the tip flexes upward thinning the shot. Going from flighted shafts to standard might be contributing too. Also, the bend profile of Mod 3 Tour-S is under the grip, so near mid-high, different from the softer PX Tour Flight 105-S.

The most annoying thing in golf, and it's not pace of play
Pepperturbo replied to larrybud's topic in General Golf Talk
This thread popped up again. Recently I played a few courses with slightly raised greens, false fronts, and tight pin positions on 11+ greens; nobody complained in our groups. Last weekend we played a par 4, pin up front, false front, back-to-front 11+ green that fed a 7' deep crossing front trough, which my buddy discovered after hitting the front apron. I played in a 2-man tournament at a private club, par 3, red pin up front, a few paces on a 12 green, false front that fed a pond, and we pared the hole. There was a full field, and nobody complained. In a few weeks, I will face a 210 slightly uphill par 3, hit the apron with too much spin, and the ball will spin off the false front back down a hill 30 yds. I am heading to Maui soon, where we will play courses that historically have the same conditions. I am reminded of a difficult par 5, a tight front green section surrounded by deep bunkers, and the weekend pin is often on the front. Talk about a testy par. Maybe this is an issue reserved for certain parts of the country or people that don't have a 58' wedge game, don't know. But it's NOT the most annying thing in golf for anyone I know. -
I can only share what I experience. The right grip size can lead to good impact; the wrong size may mess up other aspects of one's swing thus impact. A retired pro friend has 10 wraps under standard TV grip to prevent hooks, or fast roll over of his hands. I played a round of golf using his clubs. They definitely prevented my hands from rolling over, and I don't hook like he does. I feel as though I lose connection to my clubhead with larger grips, and with grips too small, I'm forced to tighten my grip too much.

I wish you a speedy recovery and even faster rehab, so you're back on the course in short order. -
Am I an idiot for getting "fitted" as a semi-beginner?
Pepperturbo replied to cbrown1170's topic in WRX Club Techs
Geting fit costs, and so does the resulting equipment, presuming you buy. Everybody talks about getting fit, which is fine. Except many quit, or you might grow out of what you're fit into within a year, maybe less. There's nothing wrong with buying a used set of standard clubs, and if the shafts don't fit, buy an expensive used set, then have grips and the lie adjusted to you. I bought a full set of Ping clubs off the shelf to learn, and 8 months later switched to Mizuno blades. -
x100 iron shafts into wedges or s400 in wedges
Pepperturbo replied to dubg's topic in Avg Joe Swings Stiff and Below
I've never even considered MOI matching, suppose old school is a perk. LOL Best to get a club set to your thoughts, take some lead tape and hit the range, add and subtract to see what feels good. Make the task fun. Swing weight is personal, for me it's all about feeling the club at the top of my swing. Ten years back my 2i-9i were D3, PW D5 and Gap D7 and LW E0. Today, 2i - D3, 3i-9i-D2&D1, PW-D3, 52-D5 and 58-D6.- 6 replies

If you want the shaft to load without 100% power, go to a softer flex shaft, maybe a mid-low bend. T100 is IMO the best, but T150 is a bit higher. There are other more forgiving sets.

Lightweight graphite iron shafts
Pepperturbo replied to 95124hacker's topic in Avg Joe Swings Stiff and Below
I tested some light weight composite shafts, 45g SR, 55g R, 65g R and 70g R. They were fine except dispersion increased maybe because my tempo doesn't fit mid-low bend profile shafts. Also, to play any of those weights, IMO the head needs to be lighter than my T100. The other issue was with the AP1 head I was using; I couldn't feel the head in my swing or at impact. Who knows, I may revisit them in the future. So, like you, I'm sticking with Pro 95i TS stiff and 115i TS stiff shafts.
